"If you'll remember, a year ago NVIDIA launched what was to become its new flagship model, the GeForce FX 5800 Ultra, codenamed NV30. Compared to its rivals, this card failed to impress where 3D gaming performance was concerned and was plagued by heat problems which necessitated an extravagant and very loud cooling solution, earning it the nickname "dustbuster". "

man what a fuckin pussy, they wernt all that loud.

maybe they need to sit by my damn server

Color me impressed. Fully twice as fast as 9800XT in Halo at high res? Sign me up.

May be faster but the ATI9800 visually looks as good if not better.

compare it to r420 when it comes out at the end if this month, not with xt, which was a 9800 pro refreshment ;)

I can accept some small differences in visual quality that you will likely only really notice in still frames if it gives you DOUBLE the framerate.

And, uh, how much is this beast going to cost? USD$700? More?

can't wait till that $ comes down. you'd be able to power sweet stereo 3D scenes.

bah yeah sure i can wait :P

That's still 279 more than what I consider to be a reasonable price for a video card ;)

Read the article, it supports 32-bit precision, the drivers/games just were not up to date to utilize the 3.0 shaders.

The only thing that irks me is the minimum 480W power supply they say it needs. I'm not too up to date on power supplies these days, but that sounds really high.

Gdamn, 480watts. Um, no thanks. 8)

Posted: Wed Apr 14, 2004 9:52 pm

that is not high anymore...if you are getting a prescott and one of these ultras...550w minimum...and a quality one too

It's apparently been tested with 350W supplies without any issues. The thing to look out for is a hefty 12V rail but really, noone should be taking the wattage as an indicator of PSU performance as it's the combined total of all four power rails (and thus ridiculously easy to fudge). My guess is that the "480W" requirement is just a minimum nVidia have set to ensure uneducated buyers get a supply that has the right +12V output on it.

yep, u r right...it's all about the maximum loads on each rail..that's why wattage doesn't matter much, but quality of teh psu does.

Thats why its better to read the label on the PSU and check the individual rails. On my 360 the 5v and 3.3v share 220 watts, and are rated at 35 and 28 amps, the 12v has 17 amps and 204 watts.

man you guys are crazy.
i wouldn't even consiter buying it untill the new r420 comes out.

buying the geforce 6 based on benchmarks comparing it to the XT is just silly.

the gf 6's image quality is really bad to.

ok lets say your playing 2004 online.
your not ganna have fuckin time to look at the detail, your ganna be to busy running your butt off.

its like with people saying they can tell a diff between 300fps and 100fps

well, seeing that ati has already dropped thier planns for thier bottom line 420 cards, i'd say they already know that thier cards are gonna be slower.

teddy, whoever said that?
ati has never cancelled their roadmap plans, nore will they ever.

and warlock, people who care about image quality don't waste their time playing unreal tournament.

They said it in one of the interviews over at rage3d.com, and no they didnt cancel any roadmap plans, only the lower end cards with the hacked down pipelines and clock speed.

According to the benchmark whores at TechTV, this card eats up 12A by itself off the +12V line!

At this point, you'd be better off dropping in a dedicated power supply for it.

12 Amps! Someone is going to need to standardize a ATX style power supply plug to the video card one of these days.

Bullcrap...

I'm an UT2k4 junkie, and play it at a pretty high level too. Still, i run the game in full detail, with 4X AF enabled....

I wouldn't want to play the game with bad quality graphics...

Or better yet....ship the card with a small power supply with transistors with really high beta values to bump up the current so the card will run on most computers.

ill take MD's suggestion, crank up the voltage on the card itself, Molex plugs are already OOOOGLY enough

I have an Antec True430, can I equipt this with an Athlon XP 3200, 3 PC3200s, and 3 7200RPM Hard Drives.
+ DVD Burner and Floppy?

Oh, I use Shuttle's AN35N Ultra mobo with a case of 5 fans (not Tornados).

Also, will I have extra power for uping the CPU numbers? (OCing is what makes this life worth living.)
