I'm looking for a FREE program to download videos from youtube that I can play in Window Media Player.

I then want to import them into my golfswing analysis software.

I know that it plays \"avi\" files. Doesn't \"see\" mp4 files.

Looks like I need a FREE converter to get them to avi.

Download Helper + ffmpeg directshow filter

The former lets you download the flv's (what you get when you play lowdef) or mp4's (encoded in h.264, what you get when you play hidef) from Youtube when browsing using Firefox. The latter is a directshow filter so that you can play your flv's and your mp4's in the crappy Windows Media Player.

well its not really a program but its a nifty trick.

If you take

and you change it to

Just add pwn right before youtube and you download the video in WMP format

That site just gives you the flv/mp4 links that Download Helper would have given you. I don't see any links on there for anything encoded in wmv.

Anybody here try doing a Google search for \"youtube downloader\"?

Top hit gets you: http://youtubedownload.altervista.org/

I'd try converting to .mov first, since that's in your given list of supported formats and it's your best bet for lossless conversion, since the .mp4 container has a subset of the functionality of the .mov container. If the program is smart, it will just swap out the containers, but if it takes any longer than a few seconds to convert to .mov, then that's your video quality being wasted away in another round of lossy encoding.

edit: Alternatively, you could use the non-free Quicktime software to losslessly go from .mp4 to .mov, or you could find a free alternative using google.

Tried youtube downloader. And also downloaded ffdshow.

I can now get \"flv\" converted to \"mov\" or \"wmv\" although the video quality it bad.

Thanks for the posts.

If you use CCCP ( http://cccp-project.net ) you can play FLV videos directly.

There are web-based Youtube video rippers that rip the video and saves it in FLV format. You could try those. Do a Google search for \"rip youtube video\".

My understanding of his problem is that he can get the .flv or .mp4 files from Youtube just fine (there have been at least four different ways to do this posted already), but his weird golf software only will play certain file formats, .flv and .mp4 not among these, even if you install the proper directshow filters to do so in Windows Media Player (e.g. ffmpeg).

That was accurate jeff250. Need files in the previously mentioned formats and a downloader and converter that doesn't degrade to bad.

If reading the files is the issue because of the formate, get the Combined Community Codec Pack. With it comes two media players of which you can choose; one of these I know is Media Player Classic. I use a codec pack for videos because there are so many codecs and not all players have every codec that may be needed.
