Continuing Climate Change Hysteria

If an unknown species goes extinct is the planet worse off for it?
WWF wrote:Researchers reported the discovery of 163 new species in the Greater Mekong region last year, and now they are at risk of becoming extinct due to climate change, according to conservation group WWF.
Seems to me the dinosaurs didn't have much bearing on the planet. Why should these 163 supposed "new" species? There were many more species of dinos than that and the planet is still here.

The planet would be fine if all species were whipped out.

Ok let me re-phrase for debate's sake.

Would humankind be worse off?

Yes. We're breeding more human resistant animals. We'll soon have super wolves or gator bears.

Yeah, if we whipped those species into line, the planet would be fine.

That's actually interesting to think about.

Since we're wiping so many animals out, the only animals left will either be domesticated animals or 'pest' animals that can actually adapt to us.
I wonder if it's possible to indirectly create a sentient species millions of years from now because of our presence. (Assuming we last that long)

If we do last that long, we'll probably have created something sentient intentionally by then, however.

I guess that makes us ancients then.

When do we make the Stargate?

who talks about the planet? The planet will continue to exist no matter what we do to it (most likely). Not sure about you, but to me species have value in their own right, like a piece of art, and I would not like them to go extinct. They are the product of such much time (if you are an evolutionist) or god's will (if you are of the other persuasion), so I hate it when they would go to waste.

Also, given the extinction rates right now (no matter the reasons for, climate change, pollution, destruction of natural habitats), it is only a matter of time when somethinc critical for our food chain is hit, and then we'll pay the cost (if only the increased costs of finding an alternative).

Consider honey bees:
Albert Einstein once predicted that if bees were to disappear, man would follow only a few years later.

That hypothesis could soon be put to the test, as a mysterious condition that has wiped half of the honey bee population the United States over the last 35 years appears to be repeating itself in Europe.

[...]

"Bees are vital to bio diversity. There are 130,000 plants for example for which bees are essential to pollination, from melons to pumpkins, raspberries and all kind of fruit trees - as well as animal fodder - like clover.

"Bees are more important than poultry in terms of human nutrition. Bees from one hive can visit a million flowers within a 400 square kilometre area in just one day.

"It is not a sudden problem, I has been happening for a few years now. Five years ago in Germany there were a million hives, now there are less than 800,000. If that continues there will eventually be no bees."

One could also argue extinction of species is a natural evolutionary aspect of life. If the dinosaurs were not eliminated, humans would not exist today.

True, of course. But there is something like a typical extinction rate, and then there is what we are having now. And this is 10 to 100 times higher than the \"natural\" extinction rate, almost like a hockey stick if you want to look at it this way :P

More like evolution encouragement. :P

Plant life would be a higher concern to me.

Ha ha! Their pitiful attempts to reclaim their thread PALE in comparison to my....awesomeness?

Side note: Everyone know that SG1 was the best show ever because of the Season 2 episode \"Window of Time\" where T'ealc and O'Niel get stuck in the time loop. You can NOT watch that episode without laughing.

Sorry....I know this was about dying animals or something....

Ah ha! I got you! That's the episode where the ancient person from that sandy planet gets turned into a human, or something like that. He goes home with Carter, uses her toaster and microwave, and builds his OWN stargate. Ha ha, nice one!

I have to take a little issue with you on this one Pandora. Not sure where you're listening from, but I hear about a lot of "save the planet" garbage in school materials and in the advertising sphere (TV, radio, print; AND the popular science literature) all the time. Daily, at least.

It is seriously annoying.

yeah, I agree, of course. Lots of stupid people around ... but, frankly, I hear such \"we have to save the planet\" not too often anymore, although they were really prevalent when I was young.

If the human race doesn't live another one hundred years, it wont be from carbon emissions. It will be from idiots electing angry idiots into office.

I've been listening to since the mid 70's in one iteration or another. The "lost in Space" movie and Star Trek "Voyage Home" were all save the planet flicks as was the new "day the Earth stood still". What a jip that was.
