Main.exe still runs after quitting descent 3

Title says it all. Any help would be appreciated cause I'm tired of ending the process every time i quit descent.

Could be a driver anomaly to blame when main.exe doesn't quit, try updating/reinstalling your sound and video drivers.

I have two computers that do this...

EDIT: BTW the drivers on this computer are updated.

In that case the solution is probably in older drivers not newer ones. A lot of the latest drivers from Nvidia and ATI have gotten pretty buggy in Descent 3 over the last couple years. Its almost getting to the point where D3 will need a legacy box of its own to run well.

And if it is an Intel video chip, its pretty much hopeless.

I had the same issue a few years ago. Turned out it was caused by audio drivers.

One way to check: run D3 with the -nosound option. If the process closes correctly, you'll know it was an audio issue.

Im typing in -nosound and its not working.

Also Bettina had an issue with HP software and printer managers. Look at running processes in Windows Task Mangler and shut down the ones you don't need.

No, no, it's not a command you type in-game.

It's an option you enter into the command-line field in the "Misc" tab in the D3 Launcher dialog.

P.S. If you don't have anything in that command-line field, I have some recommendations.

i am typing it into the misc tab. and when i go back into the settings, the command is gone.

Try \"run as Administrator\" (I'm assuming you have admin priviliges).

No dice.

Create a shortcut directly to main.exe and in the target box put:
C:\\Games\\Descent3\\main.exe -launched -nosound

Replace C:\\Games\\Descent3 with wherever you have D3 installed.

Worked but main.exe is still there.

Okay, so we've established it's not an audio issue.

If you're running using OpenGL, try Direct3d, or vice versa, and see if the process is still there. That'll tell you if it's graphics-related.

Try switching to a different renderer (OpenGL or Direct3D), and or -nonetwork -nopentium3.

running direct3D and main is still running

EDIT: I usually run OpenGL

Also, does this happen only when launching games via the .cx tracker or Vortex?

Windows XP,uhhhh intel VIIV, nvidia GEFORCE 7300

This happens no matter what way I start descent, tracker or not.

Have you tried Krom's suggestion of the -nonetwork option? (This would help identify if it's a networking issue.)

add Main.exe to your antivirus/firewall exclusion list

Have you tried clearing out your \\descent3\\custom\\cache folder?

Only one file in it, and it says empty.

oh man.. is this STILL doing it?

can you give us a summary of what you've tried so far?

And system specs as well as a Dx readout.

All the above mentioned in this thread I have tried.
Descent 1.4, running no-cd patch, Mercenary

Windows XP, Media Center Edition, SP2
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU
6300 @ 1.86 GHz
1.58 GHz, 0.98 GB of RAM

NVIDIA GeForce 7300 LE

Ummmmmmm.... anything else i should mention?

BTW this is doing the same thing on three separate computers, one also running vista.

If it is doing it on 3 different computers, odds are there is some program you use on all 3 of them that prevents D3 from exiting properly. Have you tried exiting/disabling all unnecessary programs and services including your antivirus/firewall? If doing that fixes it, then reboot and start disabling programs one at a time till you find the one responsible.

Well, McAfee is the only thing I can think of at the moment that my computers have in common, but I dont see any way of terminating it completely.

He/She/Isaac obviously can not accept very simple advice....round and round

yet if someone regurgitates it, S13driftAZ finds it appealing...

or just maybe it's just beyond his/her/Isaac's scope of understanding
