What console system supports the best multi-player games?

Post by []V[]essenjah »

I've been thinking about maybe getting a console system so that my real-life friends and I can play some games together since PC games don't support split screen anymore. Anyway, I was wondering what system is best used for haveing your buds come over and play? I really love the co-op of Halo but I don't know of any other cool multi-player games for X-Box. Anyway, could I get some thoughts?

I'm betting xbox at this time, although I'm not that well informed on the console scene.

for games that you and your friends play?

well, ps2 only has 2 controllers, and although there are ways to play with 4 players, i dont know how many games support it.

xbox has its fair share of games and is all good, as long as you dont plan on ever getting sick of halo.

gamecube is, IMO, the best "party" system, it has the most games that you can play with your friends, although the games can be kind of cutesy (still fun tho!)

aside that, its really up to you which system you get - try to find ways to play games on each system / try them out and figure out which you prefer

Big N has said that they're no longer designing their games for loners. With the Cube you get alot of good cross platform games (Metal Arms, Soul Calibur II, etc) as well as the great first party games like Super Smash Brothers, Mario Party, Mario Kart Double Dash, and the upcoming Metroid Prime 2 (which, yes, has multiplayer). It's not just for kiddies, as Ikaruga and F-Zero GX are both fun multiplayer games but also hard as hell.

Plus it's also the cheapest. And you can play with wavebirds, which are the best controllers I've ever used.

Well, I'm not too big into the side scrolling games is my problem. The Gamecube looks pretty cool but most of the multi-player games seem to be side scrollers other than the new Rogue Squadron Game. (it was kinda fun.)

I think I'm looking at the X-Box pretty hard too. I love the Halo multi-player and I'm waiting on the edge of my seat for Halo 2. However, I have the first Halo on PC so this makes me wonder what I should do. Are there any non-side scroller multi-player games on the cube?

what exactly is makeing you think that the gamecube is only sidescrolling games? or even, for that matter, that the majority of games on gamecube are side scrollers?

the only "sidescroller" that i can think of on the GC is super smash brothers...

Well, maybe sidescrollers isn't the word I'm looking for. More like 2D style gameplay. Only being able to move left, right, up and down. I also don't really care for puzzle games unless they have some good FPS stuff included. Another way to put it, is that one of my buddies loves to play Mario Party or Mario Golf but I'm not really big into it. The Go-Kart game can be fun but isn't really my style. Zero FX I played and I never really cared for it. It reminds me a lot of the old wipeout games. It's fast sure, but I can't really relate to it and it's too hard to really enjoy it. NFS 6 is fun but I had my fill of it on the PC version. 7 for multi isn't that great but is ok.

The games I generally enjoy are:

Fighting
Flying
FPS
Or Stealth
Or humorouse
I also like some third person games such as Metal Gear Solid
Or I like games that are very different.

The Gamecube is a hell of a lot of fun. That's all I can say.

If you want Halo, get the XBox. If you want a more socially oriented system, get the Cube. Nothing better then a four player round of Smash Bros' or some serious racing with F-Zero GX. Mario Kart, Soul Calibur 2, both unbelievably good multiplayer games. Star Fox 2 is supposed to be excellent for multiplayer, with up to four players (per Gamecube, you can network other Gamecubes together, of course) on the ground, in tanks or in the air. Of course, that one doesn't come out until the 4th quarter this year. In the mean time, Starcraft: Ghost looks pretty cool. Again, great multiplayer support (supposedly).

I don't know if that helps much at all. The XBox just doesn't do it for me. Mainly because I couldn't part with F-Zero or Smash Bros'. That and the XBox lacks any style or sophistication, especially when it comes to the controls.

Oh, and as for the Playstation 2, don't waste your money. Unless you're into the RPG Final Fantasy type games that is.

For multiplayer with real-life friends, I'd have to recommend the GameCube or the Xbox. Both have four controller ports and a few games that suppose them, although the GameCube features many more games in this regard. It was a glaring oversight in the PS2 design to not have four controller ports, imho.

Xbox mainly has Halo. It could have others, but I'm not really aware of them.

GameCube has ten million variants on Mario Party, Mario Tennis, Golf, Smash Bros., Mario Kart, F-Zero, and Super Monkey Ball.

Overall, for what you want, I think the GC is probably the better choice. But, then again, you've already dismissed all of those games as not liking them. So... yeah. :?

Well, one thing that Xbox has going for it is Live, quite possibly the best online system ever devised.

ok, i have at one time or another owned them all...

fighting games are best on xbox if you like fluidity. cross-console fighting games are always faster and more fluid on the xbox. check out dead or alive 3. awesome. if you like cartoony kiddy fighting games you cant beat super smash bros on the gamecube. its a fun game, but its not a real "fighting game." ps2 has the tekken series which is cool, but play tekken after you played an xbox fighting game and you'll miss the speed of the xbox. i know i did.

flying games i really cant say, never was much into them.

FPS definately a tossup between the three. xbox has halo 1 and 2, gamecube has metroid, ps2 has a TON of games to choose from but the ones that are any good are also on xbox and are smoother and better looking, with a few exceptions (mgs and socom). splinter cell is cool, rainbow six series are good on xbox, although the ps2 has metal gear solid games and socom which are awesome.

if you want RPG thats where the ps2 wins. square-enix. enough said.

sports games are best on xbox imo, better gameplay becuase it can handle the game better playing madden on the ps2 and cube especially feels like running in jello compared to the xbox. only drawback is playing them online. ea sports games are ps2 only for online multi, and ea sports games are usually the top notch sports games.

its really just a matter of taste, i suggest trying them out first. play a friends, or go to best buy and try em out.

i had all 3 and they are all good, but ive always been most fond of the xbox. i love the controllers (not the originals but the controller-s that came out later, those things are the best controllers ive ever used imo). the sports games and the fighting games are better, and it will have halo 2. that was enough for me. ive got the trusty ps2 for final fantasy though ;)

Only an hour? It takes me over 6 straight hours to get sore fingers, let alone hands.

(Maybe I just play too many games?)

Noone's mentioned the always fun (IMO) Pro Skater games, which can be played on any system. IMO, the Pro Skater games are better on the PS2 because of the way the controller is set up. I just always wish that I could actually GET someone (one of my friends) that is good at the Pro Skater games to play me. Don't have much competition locally, and it's a pain in the @$$ to play online on anything that supports it, plus the whole lag-aspect might not be too cool, esp in a tight game.

You can play many Live games with friends in the same room. They'll show up as GamertagGuest, where Gamertag is the Gamertag under which everyone is playing. This is fun to do in MechAssault. :D

Well, I played one of my friends cube and I just didn't like the feel of it. He also brings it over pretty much whenever we do anything anyway. I also asked my friends to put it to a vote and all of them voted I get the X-Box. One of them even owns one and will sell me his Metal Gear Solid 2 game to me cheap. I can't really get enough of Halo either and Halo 2 is comeing out. Plus I love fighting games, raceing games, FPS games and that new bond game looks like fun, as well as Crimson Skies. One other cool thing, I found out that there will be a tournament next month just across the lake from me in a rather large arena where 256, 4-player teams will compete on X-Box Halo :) $40 per team so I figure for $10, an hours drive and a soda it's worth the trip for some no-lag competition. :)

Everything or Nothing (the new 007 game) *is* pretty tight, and it's pretty challenging to boot (if you play for all the platinum metals). The only thing I disliked is that Bond doesn't get to A) score with the bad chick, or B) directly fight and kill the bad chick (however, she *is* hot, but then again you don't get to see much of her, you get to see more of Jaws, darn him.)
