Since he actually posted at descent2.de recently, I'm inclined to believe it...

Yes, it's me! It's nice to be recognized.

Aaronb and I have been playing D2x-xl recently, and I'm working on a little project to make it easier to play d2x online like in the old Kahn/Kali days.

He lies. It's not really him.

Aaron is just mad because of all the kills I'm getting on him with the Mercury missiles.

Welcome \"back!\" Hope the family is well. Is it still growing? The last we heard, you had just had a second? :)

Excellent news about the project! Thanks for the heads up!

Awesome. I only play D2 single player since I don't have time for multi and I'm so rusted it's not funny. :D

Welcome back, Kevin! :D

Would you have thought that ten years after D3, it would still be played, with new levels and mods still being developed? 8)

Keep us posted on the project (a game-listing/matching app, maybe?).

Thanks Duper. Yes, the family is well. Christopher (who was born slightly after D3 came out) is now 10, and Nic is 5. No more kids for us though. ;)

My little project is some changes to the D2X-XL net code to support a tracker system that behaves just like old Kahn/Kali games. So inside D2 you will select an option and you will be presented with a list of trackers. Once you choose a tracker you will see the regular game list. You can start a game and play for a while, then leave and come back, etc. Basically it's a built-in capability of what used to happen with Kali and IPX.

With this system you will be able to play seamlessly behind a NAT server with some local players and some on the other side of the NAT.

I've got the server side stuff done, I just have to finish the changes to the game client code.

Regarding D3, I love D3 still and like to play it. I'd love to be able to work on it more and make improvements to it, but I haven't been able to get permission to do so yet.

Kevin, thanks for everything and anything done relating to Descent. It is still by far the best game ever made.

Nice! So that's what all those commits for the network stuff have been coming from. :)

I'm working on an fmod implementation. Don't have a lot of time for it lately though. I'll get it done eventually. :P

I know you probably have not had a chance to take a good look around......

It would be nice if your would share your work with the other descent open source group, at least for the benefit of the entire Descent Multiplayer Community

All of the OLD-SKOOL KALI/KAHN players use this version for Descent(s)

But that is up to you

Regarding rebirth, I have no problem supporting and working with both projects, if the rebirth guys are open to help.

It's sad that there are two competing efforts, but I understand the personalities involved. It's been something that has bothered me since I first put the d1 code online.

If/when the owners of D3 code ever agree to release the source I'm going to encourage them to do so under a GPL license so there won't be as much duplication of effort. I'm normally not a fan of GPL, but in this case I can see the benefits.

At any rate, I don't know how well my project will be received -- so I'm viewing it as an experiment.

I have a lot of ideas I might pursue if people like what I put out there. But I know this community well enough to not have any expectations that people will like what I do just because I think it's a good idea.

Really Kevin, anything you do for the game and community would be cool! :)

(just don't wrangle us into that new IW.net system  ) ;)

Great to see you Kevin!

If/when the D3 source code ever gets released, that would be a great day for the Descent community at large. Every so often when we were working on AntiCheat, it would be mentioned that if we \"had the source\", it would be so much easier to do this or that. :) If you would be open to it, I am willing to release the AntiCheat code to you so you can look it over and see the changes we made to the game mechanics as well as the added features. Perhaps use it as ammunition to encourage the makers of D3 to release the source. There is a lot of wonderful things that can be accomplished, changed, added, that it seems a shame to let the game stay as it is.

Have a great Thanksgiving!
