Outlook 2003 backup and restore

I have been experimenting copying all my PalmPilot files into Outlook so I could sync them with an iPod Touch which I'm thinking about buying. Got that done after jumping through a few hoops like uploading my calander to Yahoo and then exporting it from there.
I have copied the Outlook files from my computer and copied them into the appropriate location on another computer after installing Outlook on it.
I now have both Outlooks the same.
My question is I have 3 files that reside in the Outlook folder on my main computer \"backup.pst\", extend.dat and Outlook.pst.
It seems that \"Outlook.pst\" is the only one that Outlook is using. What's the \"backup.pst\" and \"extend.pst\" for?
Also, anyway to figure out what size files I'd be downloading onto the iPod from Outlook calendar, notes and contacts?
