I have some digital video files that are AVI. I understand I need to convert them to MP4.

Anyone have a good free converter?

And btw..I know how to use Google but would like to have a referral if anyone has one they like.

avidemux is one of my favorites. It will convert to just about anything you want.

Meh, another ffmpeg wrapper on the Hall of Shame.

Does that include the free versions Jeff?

There is no option or link to download the source code even for the free version, which puts it in the hall of shame.

RgR! I'm going to look for something that doesn't put ME in the hall of shame.

ffmpeg also maintains a list of projects that respect their license here:
http://www.ffmpeg.org/projects.html

You're not going to find an audio/video converter these days that doesn't somehow use ffmpeg, either legitimately (as in the link above) or illegitimately (as in the hall of shame), so the above link is a good place to start. It's a good list that, if anything, is too long. Unfortunately, I can't recommend one, because I just use the ffmpeg command line tool in and of itself without any of that GUI wrapper fluff. ;)

x2. I'm pretty sure it's got pre-sets for ipod-compliant mpegs that will aloow you to accomplish your task in command line with only a couple switches.

I use mencoder in linux, which is basically an ffmpeg wrapper.

In windows I used to use SUPER- you might want to check it out. Last I checked, the UI was really heavy, but it worked. All-in-all, if you read up on the man pages for ffmpeg/mencoder, you can find the switches that you like and bypass having to mess with a UI at all.

Try this: link

As a side note: as I've gotten deeper into linux, I've grown a bigger and bigger appreciation for the terminal. Just 'cause you got windows doesn't mean that the fastest/best/easiest way to do things isn't in the command line.

You can try using Handbrake
Another free one I like is Mpeg Streamclip

These will convert the avi files into something you can use like iPod mp4.

If you are working on a Mac, you may follow this guide about avi to iPod mp4.

They are all very goood.
