What's up with the edit function?

There's a table in the database which gets filled/updated every time a post or edit is made (a big dictionary or search table, as I recall); it slows everything down when it gets really huge.
In the past when it's gotten bad enough, someone has gone through and cleared the table out. I don't remember who did that, though.
