galvanized steel table?

I have some extra sheets of galvanized steel and decided to put them on my old desk, because it makes a nicer surface. Now I'm wondering if there's any danger to being in constant contact with this kind of metal. I know it's really bad to breath this stuff, when you're cutting it.

I don't have a good grasp on how quickly the galvanize would wear off... you might end up feeling like the surface is perpetually dirty. Especially considering the fact that application of water accelerates the process.

Personally, I'd paint it. Probably after attaching it to the table.

My skin that comes in contact with the metal starts to smell a lot like my guitar strings. That's fine for my guitar, but not for a table I plan to spend hours working on. So I'm putting the sheet metal back later today when I get home.
