Since the forum FAQ seems to lead to a blank page, what are the forum's ranks and the corresponding post counts needed to attain them?

0-20 Cadet
21-500 Ace
501-1,000 Captain
1,001-2,000 Admiral
2,001-3,000 Fleet Admiral
3,001-4,000 Defender
4,001-5,000 Material Defender
5,001-10,000 Master
10,001+ Grand Master

Wouldn't Fleet Admiral be above the Material Defender?

And what does Master and Grand Master have to do with Descent?

Bait Rank? Not sure what you mean by that. And how do you get custom ranks like the ones I see you have? Is it something the mods give you through under-the-table dealings?

Custom ranks are something only admins can do, and the ones on the DBB are around for various reasons. Some people have \"Benefactor\" because they donated towards the server costs at one point when KB was asking for donations, \"Demigod\" was a custom rank given to moderators at one point, \"Alumni\" was given to mods who retired, other people have special ranks just because people thought it was a good idea.

There are also some bugged custom ranks around from when KB was toying with the system, a few members have them set and you can spot them by the use of the _ symbol instead of a space between DBB and the rank, so for instance \"DBB Admiral\" becomes \"DBB_Admiral\". This is the remains of something KB was trying to do which has the side effect of making the members permanently stuck at that rank (although its a 5 minute fix for an admin to correct it).

Other forum software such as Simple Machines, PunBB, etc. allow for the user setting their own custom rank.

It's not pointless. You can set your own title, instead of having to go with whatever junk is on the message board you're using.

I see what you're saying, but it depends on the forum. On a Linux or Python forum I really like it when an high or specialist ranking user gives me advice on something, because I have some idea on their experience and their trustworthiness.

that's where color & icons or badges come in. :P

Master was originally a joke rank. Back in 1998, I accumulated about 400 posts over the course of 6 months, and the then-admins thought I was a total spammer and needed a talking to. Common sentiment was that I'd get banned long before 5000 posts, and nobody else would ever accumulate that many. Or, that if anyone ever did, they would have truly mastered the DBB.

Grand Master was put in years later, once we had people actually reach Master.

I think I am one already. It took long enough.

I liked seeing Ace though . Now that I'm not an Ace, rank doesn't matter anymore (the words just don't look cool enough).

Of course, if I could have "Pure Evil" as a custom rank it might be different...
I think I'd regret it later though.

It was funny as hell when Mobius reached "Master" and bragged about it, so Xciter reset his post count to 5. (He also did the same thing to JMEaT @ 7000 posts.)

I'd think a lot of forums would ban someone who posted 400 times in one weekend unless it was so huge a forum that it could still blend in. I'm betting whatever forum it was, it was NOT the something awful forums.

I was gonna say... on this forum, if you post without having something worthwhile to say, you're going to get a warning, followed by a short-term ban, followed by a long-term ban. You've gotta be in a special place to be able to get away with 400 posts in a weekend.
