Newer Power Supplies..

Quick question - has the \"P4\" connector on newer power supplies been replaced? I know the six-core CPU's take more power, and Motherboards that support them have a new 8-pin connector..

Has the 8-pin cable replaced the P4 Cable?

Cost a little more but it has p4 connections and the 8 pin connections.

to answer your question....

yes.....

P8 is the new connector for the Dual/Quad/Hex core motherboards

okay cool - working with a Dual Core MB, that has the P4 connection. I guess the Four of the Eight pins on the P8 would match the P4.

Thanks for the knowledge :-)

Interesting. A PSU I bought last week came with two P4 connectors. Could they just be plugged in together on a motherboard with the 8-pin connector?

A lot of motherboards come with onboard video these days and it is fine if you are not a gamer. That motherboard has a PCIe x16 slot anyway that can probably take a more powerful video card if he wants or needs. Just no SLI but hardly anyone does that.

Onboard doesnt matter, i have a PCIe card im putting in. I have everything i need except the MoBo and PSU, i was just having trouble finding a PSU that has 2 Six-Pin PCIe connections & a P4 connector. If the P8 replaces P4 then the PSU i found should work just fine.

Exactly - I have all the other parts to build a Budget gaming rig. I just need to spend about $100 to get it all going

Dual-Core P4 @ 3.0ghz
4gb DDR2 PC6400 Ram
GeForce 9800 GTX+ (512mb)

Not the latest and greatest tech, but its on the cheap!

4-Pin/8-Pin EPS Connector: 1

What you are looking for is a PSU that is compatible with ATX v2.2 / ATX12v which means it includes the 4 pin power connector. Most newer PSUs are also EPS12v compatible with means it can do the 8 pin power connection too.

So a pure EPS12v PSU is not what you are looking for, but I don't think I've ever seen a pure EPS12v PSU. They are all ATX12v + EPS12v compatible with a 4 / 8 pin connector or just pure ATX12v with only the 4 pin.
