Descent 2 and Win7 64 bit?
Which version of Descent 2 runs and looks the best on a Win 7 64 bit system, DXX or D2X-XL?
It's not really a prime-time thing - it already runs in Win7 64-bit and I think the author might even develop it under that environment - it's mostly that sometimes people have trouble installing it, or their hardware conflicts with it, or maybe there are some bugs that trip them up in the latest version, or something like that.

Ia - Install Descent 2 from the CD (Run Setup.exe on CD in compatibility Mode) into the Descent 2 directory (e.g. C:\\GAMES\\DX2)MK-Defender wrote:My disc won't even fire up and install..
or
Ib - Copy all files of the folders CONTROLS and D2DATA from CD into a directory on your hard disk (e.g. c:\\games\\DX2). Then extract the DESCENT2.SOW in the same directory with Winrar/7Zip.
---------------------------
IIa - Install Infinite Abyss CD add-on if you have it (Run Setup.exe/Install.exe on CD in compatibility Mode - already as 1.2 embedded) into the Descent 2 directory (e.g. C:\\GAMES\\DX2).
or
IIb - Copy patch 1.2 into the Descent 2 directory (e.g. c:\\games\\DX2). Then run it(Right Click "Run as Administrator" Vista/W7).
---------------------------
III - Copy the files of D2X-Rebirth into the Descent 2 directory.
Run Descent 2 with the d2x-rebirth-gl.exe!
(First Right Click Properties/Compatibility/Change for all Users "Run as Administrator" , check 'Disable Visual Themes' , Check 'Disable Desktop Composition' and Apply -Vista/W7).

Hmmmmmmmm. Like BUBBALOU said, Zico appears to be preparing a new version of Rebirth. His site only goes to a page with a Pyro in silhouette and a notice, \"be prepared _\" on 2010/9/28.
I was going to download the most recent version, but I think I'll wait and see what he puts out in 3 days.
Thanks Foil. The newest version I have is 1.12.12. Does it have to be a recent version, or will older ones work just as well?

Well, versions still work just as well as the day they were released - that is the simplest way I could put it. If it was buggy then it'll still be buggy now (but I don't remember 1.12.12, it was a while ago); if it wasn't, it'll work just as well now.
If you're trying to play recently-built levels or multiplayer, then it might be more important to have a recent version. If it's levels that are compatible with original D2 (the majority of them), it's up to you.
P.S. If you experience problems with the version you had, of course updating to the newest version is worth a try. I cannot guarantee it'll fix the problem(s) though.
