Descent like fun on the Playstation 3...is there any?

I just put a PS3 in the house for the family to enjoy and I'm thinking surely by now someone must have created a game that possesses some of the same qualities as Descent3 like flying in zero gravity, shooting enemy ships and has an online multiplayer aspect to it.
Anyone have any suggestions?

If you're willing to consider a racing game, try
Wipeout HD. It's something I played over the summer. I'd definitely consider it the \"Descent\" of racing games, complete with difficult learning curve.

Glad to see I'm not the only one interested in Wipeout.
I don't have a PS3 right now but I've played older versions of the game
and seen game play of Wipeout HD. I Can recommend it to anyone,
especially Descent players.

I've played the PSP games. They were fun though I didn't consider them anything like Descent. It was more just \"racing without wheels\". (Of course there were the weapons too).

Olympia Gold 3 is the Descent of racing games.

I've never seen anything even close to Descent-ish on the PS3. The only one I can think of with a fast-action flying-shooter feel is
WarHawk.

warhawk 2 is not as warhawk-ish as warhawk 1

You could always get the PS1 version of Descent, and Descent Maximum. I believe the PS3 is compatible with any game that was released for an older Playstation.
Of course finding those would be something of a challenge. The last time I checked the Playstation online store didn't have them.

Before there was the PS1, there was the PS-X ^_~

Nah, one can already play Descent Maximum thru D2. Just download the mission.

There is one of the Wing Commander games on the PSN. But no Descent like game as far as I know. I haven't bought any psn games for probably about a year now. They just aren't coming out with anything worth it any more, plus they started charging $15 for most instead of $10. That kills \"virtual\" purchases for me.

Was Olympia gold 3 that massive mod for D3? I tried it quite a while after it was released, but it was extremely buggy...

I tried it on a LAN with my brother, same conclusion. It crashed when the non-server player won.

Olympia Gold 3 was never finished, and the last version released still had a number of bugs.

Wipeout reminds me of Rollcage and Rollcage 2. Both were made for PS, so they're aged... but fun with a learning curve.
The problem for a true 6-DOF playstation game is that there isn't enough control space... so people end up overwhelmed by the complexity of trying to just control their ship. For a PC, at least you could map to like 12 keys for a single hand.

Exactly.
The PS1 Descent games suffered from that very problem - I just ran out of controls every time I tried to find a config that allowed simultaneous trichording/afterburning/shooting. It's the main reason I never went back and re-played them on Playstation; once through was enough.

Yeah, it almost became sort of a swear word around here. x_x
Well if it's any consolation, I stole your avatar ^_~
Actually, I think the reason OG3 was so buggy was because it was designed to take advantage of certain key features of the 1.5 beta patch.

Y'think?
I think we're getting off topic and we still haven't answered Will's question (though I think the answer is probably that there aren't any Descent-like games period).

It's been answered multiple times.
