It's planned obsolescence. Did you really think the RIAA and MPAA would create an "immortal" data format? Of course not! They want to cash in when the next medium comes along that rivals CDs. :evil:

i can just see it now.......Smart Cards that have degrading transistors and degrading plastic cases.

that's been known years ago. cdr's lifetime was estimated of about 10 years back then. i myself had well known brand cdr's which worked fine for 4 years, one or two of them then suddely wouldn't work anymore.

i remember that brand clearly because i thought they make reliable products until this happened. but hey, there's always an xx%-error quota.
anyway, no matter what brand it is, i'm going to backup my backup cdr's every five years or so, just to be safe.

the only medium i know of, which lasts a few million years, is stone. heh :P
