I'm trying to load Vista onto Virtual PC and get an error message "A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please inserted now."

I've used the original Windows Vista ultimate CD and also burned an iso file from it. Neither work.

I've also tried to use oracles VM virtualbox and get a different message which I can't remember right now. Still no luck. Any suggestions?

Vista disclaimer; I'm trying to do this because I have a non-geek friend who calls me from time to time with questions regarding Vista. It's easier if I can see his system.

If you are already running Windows 7 then there is really little need, 7 and Vista are virtually identical as far as settings and the control panel go.

One suggestion though, it is possible you are trying to install the 64 bit version which might have problems in some virtual machines. Try the 32 bit version instead.

I agree except I even get into desktop and screen savers with him.

The other thing is, it's driving me crazy that I can't do it.

However, don't want to waste much of your time on this for your sakes.

Also, I'm trying to install it on my XP machine.

It's probably be easier just to setup a LogMeIn account and remote into his system.

I've got about 30 people on my LogMeIn account but this guy is just a little to squirrelly. He could think I stole a coffee cup out of his cabinet. Well maybe not that bad but not comfortable having access.

Geez - do you get paid to help people like that? If you have a friend who won't let me you help them in a convenient way, just tell them tough

First I'm a Christian and use computers to help people (my ministry) and it's not that he won't let me on, it's that I don't want to have access to his computer.

what is the error, and when does it happen?

Using Virtual PC and the orig CD I get error after I choose "Language" that "a required driver device is missing..."

Using VirPC and using the ISO file I burned from the above disk I get :Windows cannot open the required file D:\Sources\Install.wim. The file may be corrupt or missing. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restartthe installation. Area code: 0 x80070570"

Sounds like your DVD might be damaged.

Looks ok visually but I'll give it a bath and see how she do.

Sorry, misread your post - I thought you said he wouldn't allow access.

Just wondering, is there a reason why you are using VirtualPC instead of VMware player or Virtualbox?

Virtual PC was the 1st progie I started with but I also tried Virtualbox with the same result. Vista would partly load and then...an error message.

I know you're not comfortable with having access remotely, but you could just use Crossloop in situations like this. All they do is launch the program, feed you a twelve digit code, and click connect. You just type in those numbers, and click connect. They sit back, and watch you do all the work. It doesn't matter what firewall they're behind, as long as they have internet access you can get in.

That, or the copy protection scheme isn't supported by the drive's firmware. I've seen that happen before with games (Supreme Commander anyone?).

Sounds like its the DVD to me, is that a retail DVD? I have seen that kind of error come up when your using a OEM DVD (IE from Dell or HP etc) on non branded hardware.

It is a "real" Vista DVD which I think came with my Inspiron 1525 laptop but I'm not sure.

If it came with your inspirion then its not a real dvd.

Your correct. Comes pre-installed on HP's. Not even sure where I got it at this point but at least you solved the case.
