How to Get Grown Children to Leave Home

Aah! The benefits of home! Somebody else pays the bills, worries about the mortgage, cuts the grass and - if a kid is really lucky - cooks, cleans and does the laundry. It's like having a butler, a maid and a really rich uncle all rolled into one. No stress, no bills to pay, no worries about the threat of unemployment, eviction, and so on. What's not to like?
An interesting read for the parents of the
boomerangs

My neighbors sent their son to OSU, for three and a half years, then for some reason ?????, he quit, just like that. Don't know why and I don't understand it. They've been mum about what happened. Think, all that tuition down the drain. He's now just a bump on the log at home and they pay for his car expenses, room and food. For a 25 year old! That would drive me crazy, either as a parent wanting to have the kids finally out of the nest and as a child wanting to break free from parental control.

That's the problem right there. I hope my kids have a clear understanding of how things work before they are grown, because I believe in letting them hit rock bottom. So far, my 17 year old has decided she is grown enough to support her self and hasn't asked me for anything
.

I was living with my parents for several years (2007-2010) while I took some college courses; they gave me $40 a week for gas and meals. It was doable but I sure didn't enjoy it, I can tell you that. Now I have my own apartment, it's much nicer.

I got no problem with that at all Null. That's exactly how good parents would do it. I will help mine tooth and nail to get where they are going. It's the one's that lay up, scheming. I will put their ass on the street until they figure some stuff out. The street helps quicken that process.

You're lucky and smart. I don't think my neighbors have gotten the concept of "Tough Love" yet. But since I don't know the circumstances surrounding their son's College dropout episode, I can't pass judgement on what they've decided to do.

I feel like this is true, but at the same time I feel like it's not a very good solution.

That solution only works for the rebellious.

My wife and son and I live with her parents right now.
We'll leave when we're ready.

Families are congealing because of the economy- and other factors. My brother had to go through a divorce last year and is staying with my mother...his kids bouncing between he and his ex. Not fun.
