And no, they're not game01 and game02
Instead, I decided to leave my mark on... Well, you'll find out if you listen to them. These two I've never seen remixed before. Not even for the D1 Mac/Playstation releases.
The titles are kind of hinty as to what they are.
Also the song pages say what remixes they are
.
And there are screenshots.
Sol Industry:
http://www.planetdescent.net/index.php? ... tem;in=827
It's a remix of the iconic song for it's... icon. I'll let you figure out what song that is.
Swarm:
http://www.planetdescent.net/index.php? ... tem;id=631
Rap remix. It even has vocals. I thought hip-hop/rap would fit into the style of the original song.
Haywire:
http://www.planetdescent.net/index.php? ... tem;id=626
Drum&Bass remix. It stays pretty close to the original but still adds some new parts and I've reinterpreted all the background sound effects.
The Forgotten:
http://www.planetdescent.net/index.php? ... tem;in=916
Vocal mix.
D1 level 18 "Pieces"
http://www.planetdescent.net/index.php? ... tem;in=774
Assembly Line:
http://www.planetdescent.net/index.php? ... tem;id=657
D3-style remix of D1 level 19 (yeah I know the screenshot is from a different level).
Infection:
http://www.planetdescent.net/index.php? ... tem;in=825
Descent level 20 -- Zombie Apocalypse remake!
D1 level 20 bad@$$ slide-guitar mix. Everything is played with so much pitch-bending it sounds like the whole song was done on a guitar synth
Chaos Bolt:
http://www.planetdescent.net/index.php? ... tem;id=632
From the song page on PlanetDescent:
Keeps the percussive feel of the original and amps up the creepiness.
Musically, instead of making a couple of big changes to some parts, I made a whole lot of little changes to the key, melody, chord progression etc. There's only really one big change in the melody and you hear it right away.
The other big changes are to the percussion to make the song feel more chaotic.
Predator:
http://www.planetdescent.net/index.php? ... tem;id=649
Another D2 remix.
Turnabout Bore in a breakbeat style. Have a listen.
D2 level 1 (with pointless silly lyrics) "Pyrohawk"
http://www.planetdescent.net/index.php? ... tem;in=778
D2 level 4 (also with silly lyrics) "Superweapon"
http://www.planetdescent.net/index.php? ... tem;in=775
All the D2 level songs are done!
Whadaya think?

Descent level 20 -- Zombie Apocalypse remake!
D1 level 20 bad@$$ slide-guitar mix. Everything is played with so much pitch-bending it sounds like the whole song was done on a guitar synth.
Tons of cave FX in the background too. Since that whole level was basically a cave.

I've basically fallen in love with your Sol Industry remix. Stuck it in a custom music zip file and loaded it up in Rebirth and spent part of last night just beating the hell out of that level, trying for a really good time in it (I'm doing "kill everything" style speed runs lately).
Any chance you've got a level 1, 4, 5, 7, or 9 remix in the pipeline? Would love to get a custom music zipfile that's all D1 redbook and remixes.

Well I've planning on doing level 9 next since I finished Sol Industry... but that said it could still be a while since I don't really have any kind of schedule for doing these.
I'm glad you like Sol Industry; it seems to be my most popular mix so far
. Except for me it comes second to Infection.

Any chance you've got an instrumental version of your level 8 remix?
And once I get more of my speedruns where I want them in terms of time and aesthetics I'm gonna start putting them on youtube. Would you be okay with me having your remixes for the level 6, 13, 19, and 20 music once I get them done? I'd like to get all of them set to either actual redbook music or quality remixes like yours rather than the various renditions of the original midis available (opl3, roland midi, and whatever my built in soundcard coughs up...they all sound a little outdated).

That would be awesome as long as you credit me
. Credit as "Vertigo Fox" would be awesomest.
As for the level 8 mix, unfortunately I don't have the project file any more and I never made an instrumental mix. I lost the .flp in a backup mishap last year -- otherwise I'd be happy to spend a couple minutes creating an instrumental version. The vocals are there for an important reason -- they weren't actually intended to be there originally; I added them in because the 'verses' of the song were kind of empty and the verses needed to have something different from in the original; otherwise it might as well be a straight up conversion of the song and I wouldn't have 'left my mark' on it. I couldn't really think of any instrumentals that would feel right without being downright worse than the original lines. Larry Peacock (I think it was him judging by his D2 redbook songs) wrote the midi very well.
Even so the vocals aren't actually obtrusive for gameplay; I made sure of that -- that mix; along with all the others; was intended to be used in-game, after all.
(Lol as a fox I just realized what 'leaving my mark' could mean -- I bet you can't get that out of your head now!)

Will do. Would obviously credit you in the video description, and if you wanted I could either link to any youtube of it you have, or its planet descent page.
And I am considering your level 8 remix for that level as well... the problem with that level is I've ran it so much without success that I start to progressively hate whatever music I assign to it after about a hundred attempts or so.
Insane is hard, man, especially trying to kill everything fast. Level 6 is actually very easy by comparison to what a lot of D1's later levels look like.
And I might try to do D2 as well, and if I want to do one unique track per level I will need to fill some things in. I have the infinite abyss version of the redbook, so thats 14 levels. Your covers of the D2 midis seem cool, I just don't know about the lyrics. Lyrics in video game musics always seem to bother me for some reason. I have to give them another few listens to figure it out.

Been looking at some more stuff on Planet Descent, including some of your stuff. That tune you made to submit to Miner Wars is really good, and strikes me as very level-5-ish. I'm tempted to use it as a level 5 replacement tune, if that would be allright. And that level 17 mix you did a few years ago is pretty cool too, any chance you're thinking of updating it at all?
And I still need something to put in the level 4, 7, 15, and 16 slots. And I would also like to find something to use as unique songs for levels 23, 25, 26, and possibly 27 as well. Right now I've got some D3 tunes in those slots just so I don't have to listen to basic midi renditions anymore

I made another improved version of the Miner Wars song (which didn't get into the game due to some last-minute complications on the dev team's part, not that I expected it to; the entire idea of community music contributions was kind of silly when you want a cohesive soundtrack, I just liked the idea of getting some help and advice from Dan Wentz himself; that part was worth it and probably a big part of the reason I've improved so much over the last few years but anyway...) sp have a listen to the new edition first -- it's a lot more piano and strings-heavy in particular which pushes it in a different direction; it's on my soundcloud @
http://www.soundcloud.com/snowfoxden, but I don't think I made it downloadable; I could send you a download if you gave me your email address. Feel free to have a look around; if you find another track you want to use I'd be happy to let you, this seems like a good opportunity for some self-promotion.
And sorry; but I'm not redoing those midi renditions from years ago. Now that I've started redoing all Descent's midi songs from scratch it feels kind of half-assed and, I dunno, dishonest, to take the midi file and play around with it unless the entire point is to play around with it; not to release it in any form.
The thing is that people liked those renditions a lot; and I got a lot of praise for what I still consider to be someone else's work. It doesn't feel right.

This new version sounds very good as well. I would love a download. PM me a link or something.
I actually like both versions. Maybe the older version as level 5, and this one as level 27? I'm trying to have different mixes of the same song for the ones that appear twice in midi form (1/23, 2/24, 3/25, 4/26, 5/27, and 12/21)

Descent geek alert!
12 and 21 are actually quite different. 21 has some extra synth melodies in several of the parts from game12 and an extra guitar part in the main chorus. Not to mention slightly different instrument volumes; and effects which aren't supported (or at least not audible at all) on microsoft's crappy midi drivers.
I'm not sure I'd like you to use an older mix of a song that I've made a newer; better mix for. It just doesn't sit well with this whole 'promotion' aspect from my side, to use something that's not as good as it could be, when something better does exist.
This is what they call 'diplomacy' I guess.

The differences between 12 and 21 are subtle enough that they are basically just remixes of eachother. And the two tracks I would be using would be the PSX/Mac rendition for Game12, and the "Lost in the Mines" OCRemix for Game21. Just feels right.
And the two versions of that song you made are both very well made, and both provide a unique atmosphere and feel. Honestly you should feel proud of both, they are incredibly well done.

More new stuff!
The Forgotten:
http://www.planetdescent.net/index.php? ... tem;in=916
Another D1 song I'd wanted to cover for a while. I'd had the general idea in my head for a long time but it only went about as far as me wanting it to have vocals -- and those vocals to be sung, not rapped or Ogre'd.
So fast forward to yesterday, when I just started working on it. And it came out beautifully.
Then I wrote lyrics and they came out beautifully too. Generally I really like this mix, if you couldn't tell already.
A bunch of the lyrics are references to the mine and it's unusualities (like the line about brothers fighting together), or to the moon it takes place on. Generally I think this is one of my favourites so far.

Liking the new track a great deal. However, no offense, I don't care for the lyrics. They make the track sound like a poor imitation of Gorillaz. Any chance for a lyric-less track?

I like it. Can you do me a new version with the vocals' pitch turned up and with more bass? I just want to hear how it sounds.

Never heard of them
. I have a singing voice that sounds a certain way and I can't really change it, at least not without some sort of expensive training. I definitely wouldn't knowingly model a song after any band that names themselves after some kind of smelly ape.
Any chance for a lyric-less track?
Well... the lyrics were a big part of this mix from the inception of the idea months ago, but I may end up creating an instrumental version for Avder's Descent video project so we'll see.
@Issac -- You mean like Griffin's Edge?
Even if I wanted to do that the fact that it's sung (rather than monotone'd, like Griffin's Edge) means it would go completely out of tune. I don't actually know of any good autotuner that wouldn't cost way too much for my current financial situation. And the mix already has more bass than advisable. But generally your request would just be way too much work
.
