Hello (oldschool) World

Post by Gnarler »

Hi Guys.
I got my name "Gnarler" from a combination of descent 1 and my friends constantly saying gnarly maaaan..

Also I remember pwning ppl in minerva wearing a 14.4 connection vs others that had better... but I had a numpad then... Now all I have is this laptop and no KB. (If there is a will there is a way)

Also I have had kali since... forever? I Think I can still get at my T number etc...

Basically I wanted to just say HI, Im going to download all the music here (Kaiaatsel is Brilliant) and I want to know if people are still playing in 2011-going into 2012...

email me @ cosmic ** gnarler ** at ** gm ** ail dawt com if you want quicker responce. (use your brain when it comes to the email addy.)

I would love to play. I bought the game but since I am in Japan i no longer have the CD... (ofcourse....) I do however have the whole soundtrack of d2 and only listen to that while I browse the forums :-P

Cheers!

(I must have missed a lot. Fill me in plz!)

Welcome (and thanks for the compliment on my music!).

First off, if you want to play online D1 or D2 you don't need Kali. Most people right now are using either DXX-Rebirth (http://www.dxx-rebirth.com/). Or D2X-XL (http://www.descent2.de/). Both of them have built-in game trackers, though DXX-Rebirth seems to be more active multiplayer-wise -- D2X-XL has had its tracker for a lot longer though, which likely means fewer problems with it (I personally use D2X-XL for singleplayer and DXX-Rebirth for multi, and my D2X-XL version is really outdated so I'm not really sure how the trackers compare).

Though oldschool may not be the place, to give you all the info in one post -- the best way to play D3 online is with Vortex: http://www.slyclan.de/. Once you've set it up it's pretty self-explanatory. That's mostly where you'll find me because I tend to be unavailabe most times D1 and D2 games are on.

Of course, you kind of need to get the games first! I (and I think most of the rest of the community) would recommend Good Old Games: http://www.gog.com/en/catalogue. You can get D1 and D2 for about 6 - 7 dollars (I'm not sure how that translates to Japanese currency -- I'm not even sure what kind of currency Japan has). You can get D3 + its expansion pack for the same price. The only thing you can't get is The Vertigo Series for D2 (which unfortunately means no Hoard games in D2).

And... I think that's all. See you in the mines!

Huh, I hadn't realized that GOG's version wasn't the Definitive Collection. That's weird. I grabbed it on there, but I guess I'll still have a ue for my old CDs too. It looks like someone did post a link to the Vertigo campaign on the forums, which is handy.

I remember purchasing all the Descent series - I always held descent close to my heart. It was the first word I learned to speed type (dos path c:\descent\descent.exe )and purchased all the series when they came out. I remember the Vertigo series had a red sheild powerup thing on it. I remember playing hoard but really not doing that well.

Anyway. I have moved many times and even was in the armed forces so my collection of CD's died. All I have is my memories. Even if I knew where my cd was I am sure it would be too scratched to play. Maybe its installed on my HD? just need to find the cables for it...

O well. Thanks for the warm welcome. I'll see you around!

Once you do get the games up and running, I know of some great singleplayer missions to get you back up to snuff. There has been some awesome stuff made for D1 and D2 in recent years (thanks in no small part to Darkflamewolf).
