I managed to help over a dozen websites redirect to http://protestsopa.org/. The White House has given a nod to the people and says "no" the the current legislation. There are already dropping provisions left and right, but it's not enough. People need to call their representatives tomorrow and raise hell. I will. Those two bills need to be killed and dropped into a singularity.*



* I know the information in the bills will eventually get out through Hawking radiation, but that will be well into the future.

I get e-mails from this group called Demand Progress that's been very vocal against it, so I've been following it for a while now. Thankfully, it seems like the massive negative backlash is making at least those members of Congress who haven't been completely bought off to stand up against it.

Just a little while ago everyone in congress was up in arms about a government takeover of the internet because the FCC was trying to push some pathetically weak net neutrality protections that were so full of loopholes to exploit that they would never do anything... Suddenly its ok for the government to seize control of the internet when its the MPAA/RIAA asking for it... Heh.

The whole intellectual property / copyright system has been screwed up ever since Mickey Mouse got involved in politics. All to keep a rodent in a cage the copyright term has been extended from its original 14 years, to 120 years and will likely be extended again soon.

With the White House declaring that they will not support the bill in its current form it has hit a bit of a stumbling block. Surprisingly enough congress hasn't given up yet, guess 10% of all campaign donations coming from the MPAA/RIAA and friends has quite a bit of force behind it. Yes, The Internet Apocalypse has been delayed for a short while longer, but even if we win this round, they will be back. Only next time they won't try it on an election year and they will dub the bill "The kittens and puppies are cute act of 201X".

Yes, it's a big threat.

If enacted, this is the first legislation to require ISP's to technologically censor the Internet. We've always had censorship in the sense that if you host child porn on your server, the feds will come to your basement and shut your server down. But this is the first legislation to require ISP's to perform censorship Great Firewall of China style.

Moreover, many ISP's such as Comcast have already deployed DNSSEC to all of their customers. DNSSEC specifically prevents man-in-the-middle attacks on DNS resolution, but yet these bills require ISP's to man-in-the-middle DNS resolution, breaking the security of the DNS system.

That's about along the lines of what I thought.

I have to wonder: Would certain sites respond by starting to push that customers access their site by IP address, rather than by DNS address?

I hope that this will raise the common internet user's awareness of their rights and what they could potentially be giving up if they back these things. I avoid DRM, HDCP as much as I can, but most people don't realize what they're potentially giving up when they live with it.

Google has something up about it today.... good, now the world will know, and hopefully care.

Thank you Walt Disney for starting the ball rolling on transferring intellectual property rights from the creative individual it was intended to protect to big corporations who have the clout to keep it that way. Nearly forever too.

Congress is backing away from PIPA and SOPA like it's suddenly poison.....for now.
