Users who risked getting the beta early are coming back saying this is the best version of Ubuntu ever released.

The Ubuntu HUD is what I'm excited about, which is an attempt to make drop down menus obsolete. I'll be installing it as soon as I can!!!

This explains why my Firefox 12 updates downloaded so slowly this morning. :P I'm still on 11.04. Has anyone tried this?

The HUD seems to be what is done in Blender3D already. Hit a button, type the function you want, hit enter. I do agree that it is much better than searching through endless menu's.
Can you tell me it's approx memory usage with nothing open (ie, booted and logged on)?

Win+R has been working like that since windows 95, but few people know many commands.

Windows Vista and later took it to another level: hit the windows button (start button) and begin typing the command/program/file/contents you want and the start menu is replaced by an instant search for it.

Roid, it's a bit more than that. You can quickly call functions within the application using the HUD.

This has the first Gnome 3 fallback mode that, with some help from the gnome-tweak-tool, can eventually be made into something usable.

I'm sorry, can you elaborate? I'm not sure what you mean. Thanks.

Gnome fallback is the desktop environment you get when you install the gnome-shell package and select "Gnome classic (no effects)" as your desktop environment from the login screen.

The gnome-tweak-tool is a package you can install that provides a GUI for the "advanced settings" that Gnome 2 provided GUI's to configure like basic power management or basic theming that the gnome developers now think you're too stupid to understand.

My xubuntu iso just finished downloading. I'm going to give it a spin in a VM.

It took me a minute to figure out what the heck you were talking about. I looked around to see where we changed desktops in the login. Now it's this obscure logo you click, which reveals a hidden drop-down menu.

Thanks for that. Now I'm running 12.04 with Unity 2D, I think it's called. Compiz on 12.04 is such a mess, I've watched compiz crash twice today on a fresh install with no compiz modifications. That sucks. But with Unity 2D all those problems are gone. I didn't know how to switch until you mentioned it was possible. Now I have the nice HUD with out compiz. I guess it's for the best. I'm probably saving memory but not running my wonderful compiz tools, which might force me back to 10.04. Compiz has tools that I need on a basic OS that gnome, KDE, and XFC lack. But I'll tough it out. If the HUD speeds up the workflow within each application, it's worth it!

I think you're using something different than me. It sounds like you're using the Unity fallback, whereas I'm using the gnome 3 fallback.

An update to my previous post: I found xubuntu to be unimpressive in general, but the xfce folks seem to do a few things right. Right now I'm experimenting with cherrypicking from xfce, using xfce's window manager and/or panel with the otherwise gnome 3 desktop.

Still waiting on Linux Mint 13 to be completed.

So MATE is Gnome 2, but developed a bit further? Interesting.

I'd go to Linuxmint if they ever got something like the HUD working on it. I love the HUD.

I LOVE LINUX MINT 13 MATE EDITION!!!

IT's the greatest OS ever made. It don't care if it doesn't have a HUD.

I took a liking to because it easy for beginners. As time goes on I'll try my hand at others like Gentoo and Arch.

It also has the latest stable versions of lots of programs, unlike Ubuntu 10.04's default repos.
This rocks! And it runs so nice right now, I might not even install Compiz, which is said to run good in Mate.
