Hold onto your hats gamersPreliminary tests indicate that the new processor can eclipse the capacity of current computers by an extraordinary 80 orders of magnitude -- a one with 80 zeros after it -- potentially taking computing into a new dimension.

Re: The future
I'd be even happy if my rig didn't sound like a souped up vacuum cleaner when it's running at full load. They also need to put out some better games than the current crop out there to get me to lay my money down on a new, futuristic hot rod gaming rig. But hey, we can still drool at the prospect.

Re: The future
Ha, quantum computing has been worked on for years, but the article's author makes it sound like it was a breakthrough just announced today.

Aren't our brains quantum thinking machines? Pshhh.. and look how great those work.

nah, "quantum" is just the latest much loved woo-woo buzzword that mystics use to explain everything in the current incarnations of pseudoscience.Isaac wrote:Aren't our brains quantum thinking machines? Pshhh.. and look how great those work.
before that it was magnetism, or electricity, or harmonics, or .... well you get the idea. Whatever is currently partially mis/understood by the masses and mysterious is always apparently the simple central explanation behind every little thing we don't understand and PS please buy my book.
the others are right, quantum computers arn't a new thing. D-Wave has been making them for years now, steady getting more complex, still looking for a market heh (they are still kinda useless, early days still i guess).

Re: The future
It's probably possible (I mean, look at how a neuron works), but I wouldn't bet on it.Isaac wrote:Aren't our brains quantum thinking machines? Pshhh.. and look how great those work.
And you're wrong/right, the brain is nowhere near perfect -- there are so many problems with it. Did you know there is no proof that what we percieve is actually the real world? Did you know colour doesn't actually exist? OK you probably knew that one.
