hahaha, the menu one was especially great!
I tried dwarf fortress a few years back, just played the single player RPG (persistent world) bit of it for a while. Reminded me of MUDs played on old dial-in BBSs.
I was inevitably too confused by the symbols, the symbol language seemed to go on forever
ie: this symbol means grass, this symbol means bush, this one metal, this one wolf ARGHBASDFB, pretty tough for a beginner. I moved on to minecraft where the symbols were more intuitive - hoping that eventually someone would port dwarf fortress into an intuitive interface, hopefully 3D.... some day.... some day....
It looks fun though, i love hearing ppl talk about DF.
I think i need to like... watch someone else play. To the Youtube!
edit: ok i'm gonna try it again, with the Ironhand graphics pack.

That's cool! I've used a graphics pack once, but I just couldn't get used to it so I went back to the character based version.

That's "adventurer mode". I've to try that some time. The one called "Dwarf Fortress" is the only mode I've played. I've been playing it for about a month. It's such a strange concept for a game. You just set "goals" and hope the Dwarves do them.
My new favorite thing in fortress mode is picking an area with an aquifer and punching through it. I'm so tense when I do it. My method involves collapsing a chunk of ground into the aquifer then using that plug to dig into the ground below. First time I did it I lost 4 out of 7 dwarves.

That learning curve one is originally used to describe MMOs. The three at the bottom were always WOW and two other token MMO's like Star Wars Galaxies and Everquest, and the one at the top was ALWAYS Eve.
Hell, we could make that one about first person shooters too.
Bottom three could be Quake, Half-Life, and Unreal, and the top one is Descent

x2. I've seen Foil post the "learning curves" one about a space MMO.

It wasn't that image, but I do recall posting about the learning curve in
Shores of Hazeron, a space MMO (still free, by the way) being developed by a former employer. Interestingly enough, it's gotten significant attention from Dwarf-Fortress players, because of it's complexity and depth and focus on gameplay over graphics.

Shores of Hazeron: "Fastest available. Anything less than 2GHz is probably too slow.
A 3GHz or faster gaming computer is recommended."
That means I'm out, with my 1.6GHz single core.
