Much to my embarrassment
I have internally nurtured this paranoid theory for years.

but
with
Skunkworks aircraft

Overflying planes seem to be louder when it's clouded over, do they fly lower?

Clouds are so majestic, i can't help but wonder what majestic things they could hide.
And that Independance Day sci-fi movie didn't help at all :S

Why the obsession with Keanu Reeves? He wasn't even in Independence Day. :P

Why doesn't anyone take my conspiracy theories seriously.

I take them as seriously as i take anyone else's conspiracy theories.
The only difference is i'm quite willing to laugh at myself.

Or maybe everyone does take them seriously, but they're just pretending not to.

LOL, Isaac!

I pretty much don't take anything involving UFOs seriously, Roid. I believe in UFOs as a deception. I think there's something there in some cases, but I don't think it's from somewhere else in our universe. The idea is preposterous unless you leave the discussion open to Star Trek fantasies of extra-warp travel from God knows where because we have no evidence of ANY planets that I am aware of which would support life unless we again open the discussion to fantasy and postulate life unlike any form of life we know of (non-carbon-based, etc).

That picture of Reeves is perfect!

I've got the biggest tin hat on the board, or is it just my paranoid delusions?

What if there were only two people on this forum and one of them was pretending to be a bunch of different people with user acounts?

And the other one was me, so that until 2007, this board was just a guy talking to himself?

What if anti-aging products make you age faster so you buy more anti-aging products?

I now remember this children's book that had this anti-littering aesop.
In the kid's dream there is a medicine factory whose emissions caused sore, itchy, scratchy throats.
The medicine was for sore, itchy, scratchy throats.

hmm. I wonder if Autodesk are pondering using Socialcam™ as a raw video feed source to feed into the cloud based version of their Structure-from-motion software 123D™.

Basically, a super-resolution (yes that's a real word) 3D map of the world which dynamically updates & increases in resolution everytime a user uploads a video. Give Google Earth & Streetview a run for their money.

Debatable whether it's possible with current-day computational power unless it's powered by tin-foil tophats, but a fun possibility none-the-less.

There are already open databases online trying to build up an array of 3D objects recognisable by robotic computer vision methods (ie: mostly objects scanned in 3D with a kinect), they exist to try to create a kindof sharable and constantly improving distributed (ok it's centralised, but i guess the data sorucing is distributed) object memory that ALL robots can pull from to be able to recognise their environment just as we do. That's a chair, i can swivel that and move it around if i need to. That's a flower. That's a human arm, hmm it looks damaged. Beep Boop

I have a dream
For a Google ]Earth Universe
Which is continually updated.
Everytime someone uploads a photo or video to a publicly indexable website (flikr, youtube, and literally every other one) - the cloud software integrates that data into the whole.
Updating...
And using super-reolution methods to continually increase the resolution of the virtual world.

We could live in this virtual world.
And exist in the real world via teleoperated robots.
We could travel to anywhere we want to - virtually - faster than light speed.
To suddenly see out the eyes of another robot that was already there waiting.
And even where there are no robots, we can still exist virtually via old collected geo-data
which was collected by the last camera equipped quadrotor to fly over.

Movement lag could be reduced, by integrating a layer of simulation between you and the realworld.
You would actually be living in the simulated world, and your actions would be interpreted via the software and then applied as necessary.
Feedback from your actions would be simulated so that they arrive to you instantly.
As the accuracy of those predictions increases, one's actions could be further and further removed from reality (time wise).
Until you are living your entire life entirely in a simulation, only to have all of your actions finally played out on a world 100 light years away
the first real-world action happening well after your death.

oh yes igor, it will be glorious

roid, that's cool! Deserves it's own op!

But what if all 3d objects... were really skewed 2d objects, pretending to be 3d!?!?! You can't explain that! :E

ah i was just reminded now of that project's name: RoboEarth, there's a link to an introduction.
some more vids here http://www.youtube.com/user/mwaibel/videos
figured you might like it Isaac coz it's open source (and ROS is open source too of course).

That's pretty bad ass. I need to buy a Kinect especially now that I know how easy it is to use on ubuntu.

edit:
What if Microsoft originally never wanted the Kinect to be hacked and used for other purposes, because they're narrow sighted morons? /conspiracy
