Once again my boss is piling more work on me. This time it's the responsibility of being a remote administrator to a GPS data server that is responsible for 50 people's paychecks.
Plus side is he finally said my old Celery 500 Dell Latitude is under powered for the task of administration. So he tells me to put together a powerhouse laptop.
I threw together an Inspiron 5150 with a 3.06 HT P4, 256MB RAM and a 64MB GeForce go FX5200 and ATA 100 40GB HD.
Hope he approves, I got the price down to 1400 bucks.
I had the choice of an IBM or a Dell. Anyone else here have an Inspiron? I hear they be nice.

I have an Inspiron, but the reason I like it is because the feature set is exactly what I need.
-lightweight (under 7 pounds)
-high resolution screen (sxga+)
-decently powered (1.7 p4-m w/ 384 megs ram)
-long battery life (6 hours in dual battery mode)
-convenient (built in wifi, both the touchpad and the nipple pointers)
I just lug it around with me to class, and can't really ask much more from it. Unfortunatly that they don't make that particular model any more. The only problem I have with it is the top panel isn't all that well reinforced, and it has several cracks in it...

Though I bet things have changed a bit, my old Inspiron (P3 650 MHz era) was very reliable. I had no major problems with it in the entire time I've used it. Which is more than I can say about the current Dell desktop, but that's another rant for another time.

On that inspiron you got Jmeat: is the video memory seperate or shared with system memory? Also, whats the battery life?
I'm pondeing getting a new laptop in a month or so and I'm highly considering a dell. Cant spend more than about $1600 for my laptop tho.

Vader, the GeForce xx and Radeon cards have seperate video memory. I think the only ones with shared memory have the integrated intel video.
Jmeat. get the 3 year warranty. It's worth the extra $200 or so.
