Wow, add me to the list of people who thought he'd already passed away long ago. Definitely a memorable actor.

One of the last voices he was still regularly doing was for the SpongeBob Squarepants cartoon. He played Mermaidman alongside Tim Conway who voiced Barnacle Boy. They must have stayed good friends from the McHale's Navy days. Borgnine was a great actor. He'll be missed.

i hope i'm not the only one who thought he was a bad actor, part of the old guard of hollywood.
i mean, i kinda hated every character he ever played :|
coz they were all cartoon characters pretend to be otherwise.
perhaps he was merely doomed to be surrounded with poor writers.

am i the only one?

not that i hate the guy... just sayin.

this feel inappropriate to say somehow. like i'm slagging off a cultural god? hmmmmm
anyway, better to speak one's mind that be bored with life i say.

I'll agree that he wasn't a great actor, and that his roles were often a bit caricature-ish. ...But that's exactly why I said (above) that he was so memorable.

One role of his that I particularly remember is probably the '65 Flight of the Phoenix. He wasn't in the film long, but I thought the disturbed oil guy role really fit for some reason.

Oh, I love that movie, and I do think that Borgnine did a very good job there for once. But I also liked him in McHale's Navy. I thought he played straight to Tim Conway and Phil Silvers very well. It's very hard to play straight to Tim Conway. On the Carol Burnett Show, Harvey Korman, bless his soul, could almost never keep a straight face when performing with Conway in a skit.

Time to kill roid. He stated an opinion on the net.
