But I don't see it happening, simply because the pyramids are a huge source of tourism revenue.

Yeah, Egypt has a huge tourism industry so harming the pyramids would be idiotic and pretty much every sane Egyptian (who make up the overwhelming majority) understands that. And I remember during the riots a large number of people formed a human barricade around the Cairo museum to protect it from looters, if a cleric wanted to try this they would probably have to do it over the dead bodies of a group a thousand times that size. I can't see it happening.

Do they care? The Muslim Brotherhood sees Americans and Europeans as evil infidels, so why take our money just to look at pagan monuments if they can do one better and keep those evil infidels from even tramping on and defiling native Egyptian soil?

The Taliban blew up the Buddhas of Bamiyan without a second thought. I'm sure those statues could have brought in tourist dollars too, if they had been left standing and Afghanistan eventually became peaceful. Did they care? Nope.

TC, as Krom alluded to, there are more than enough Egyptians who do care. The clerics in Egypt are not nearly as powerful as the Taliban in Afghanistan.

You know, I really hope so Foil. I hate to see historic treasures destroyed because it's some affront to someone else's religion. Islam is especially intolerant. What a waste.

Out of curiosity Foil, what should we do about a bunch of religious fundamentalist nutcases trying to destroy national treasures all over Africa and other parts of the world? Are we to become the world's antiquities police? Do we even have the resources and money to even carry this off? And remember, Americans and the especially the British, were raiding and desecrating Egyptian tombs back in the 19th and 20th centuries all in the name of "protecting those precious artifacts for museums and collectors".

Don't get me wrong, Al Qaeda and any other fundamentalist group destroying something because it's blasphemous to their religion is the stupidest idea on earth. People can be so shortsighted and idiotic sometimes, usually by doing something in the name of their "God". But what resources do we put towards preventing it? We could use the U.N., "cough, cough", but a lot of Americans think that the organization is either too wimpy to have any effect, or too strong and too big a threat to American exceptionalism to even consider working with.

Well…we are out to kill these bastards anyway, so we might stake-out these artifacts…and when they show up…boom…
