A Slow Evolution to Communism

As I watched the DNC convention I was struck by a promo vid stating "The Government Is The Only Thing We All Belong To". Couple this with no mention of God in the Democratic Party platform I get the feeling that the Progressive/Communist wing of the party has gained ascendancy and look to make our nation into a godless state with the government as our holy father. Only problem tho, its been tried already and failed.

What part of 'the Government is the only thing we ALL belong to' would you differ with? In a system based on a government of We the People, it is, on it's face, true. We don't all belong to the same church, political party, lodge, sportsmans club, country club, civic organization or any other such thing, but we DO all have a stake in our government and whether it succeeds or fails. Also, I heard God mentioned 9 times by one speaker alone(the Iraq vet running for Congress in Illinois) and I only listened to 4 speeches out of the whole night. So, once again, lacking substance, yet another right-wing nut just makes up 'facts' to suit his own purpose. Where I grew up, that was called LYING. Nice job. Further, in a system in which a state religion is Constitutionally banned, you live in an historically 'Godless' system, in terms of government. You are free, however, to worship the God of your choice, or not. May it ever be so.

The speakers are not the official platform. Nice try at deflection though.

why the heck should the platform mention God? Really. And, whose God should it refer to? That of the Jews, the Hindus, Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, Rastafarians? What place does a reference to God have in a political platform that seeks to shape the government of a non-theistic system? Yeesh. Oh, and apologies for my misread, Woody, I thought you were referring to references from the stage. My bad.

NP Mate, though I think the term "God" in general does not mean a particular religion. The word "God" is a reference to a higher power and sets a certain moral code. While atheist may say there is no god and people can still be morally good, I just have to wonder what society would be like if there was never a acknowledgement of a supreme being.

Woody touches on truth here. I heard it said long ago that to build unity, everybody needs a common enemy. It's just the nature of people. You can piss one off with the wrong word, or make one cry with a beautiful song
. The only way to maintain a free and peaceful society is to share common ideals and beliefs. At one point in time in this country we were held together by our beliefs in God and Country, and it worked. People were self-sufficient, innovative and forward thinking. Every morning, we said the Pledge of Allegience. It built community and brotherhood. Why did that change? Whether we like it or not, the nature of people is to draw together and that results in the need of structure and leadership. If I was in charge, I wouldn't think to teach people they were just a bunch of hairless apes, they might start believing it
.
EDIT: But we kinda are too

Last I heard, the government was supposed to be formed and run by the people it represents, not the corporations, not the military industrial complex, not the special interest groups and not wealthy lobbyists. You keep fearing a government run by democrat commie socialists. Come on woody, that is
so far from reality today that you may need to have your head checked for being stuck in
back-in-the-50's syndrome. Either that or
Fox News brain rot.
