The Greek name for amber was ἤλεκτρον (elektron), "formed by the sun", and it was connected to the sun god (Helios)

While amber is not actually named, it is called the concreti maris purgamentum, "the leavings of the frozen sea" after the spring melt.

I love that Greek logic: It's yellow. Must have come from the sun.

It's more likely they did that because it's combustible and was used as fuel. Fire=sun, you get it.

But did the greeks fathom that the sun could be a ball of fire?
I must brush up on my mythology at the expense of more important stuff.
