Voters approved an amendment legalizing recreational marijuana use in Colorado on Tuesday, making this one of two states to end prohibition of the drug but also raising new legal questions and setting up potential court battles over the measure's implementation.

Amendment 64 led late Tuesday night with 53.3 percent voting yes and 46.7 percent voting no...

I personally voted no, partially because it wasn't a well-defined piece of legislation, but I considered voting yes for a while, because I think it would ease some of the criminal issues surrounding it.

So, thoughts?

I am divided on this issue. I've used it with great success for pain, (I have 2 crushed disks and moderate degeneration in my right hip joint), But, I also got tired of being stoned all the time. I guess I think the criminality of it should be removed and people come to their own conclusions. I've been off it for about 2 weeks now and havn't missed it at all, except when my back and hip start searing. For me it was more a religious decision to quit and as a way to test myself and beliefs. It definitely opens up your mind and allows free thought but it's such a divisive social issue I felt i should quit for the greater good. To each his own is what I say. I would have voted yes just to remove the government from the equation.

I thought weed was illegal at the federal level, and states could not make it legal.

you are correct, Spidey.......my guess is that, with re-election campaigns over, enforcement drops to zero and that the next 5-10 years see the national legalization, and TAXATION, all in the interest of increased local and federal revenue.

I have no interest in smoking it myself, but I don't see how doing so is any worse than heavy cigarette smoking, and it's certainly far less harmful than widespread alcohol abuse. The whole "gateway drug" label is completely false, so I can't see any good reason why it shouldn't be legal.

Anyone who has both drunk alcohol and smoked marijuana knows which of these is safer for liquor stores to sell.

I remember seeing some study once that assigned values on a 1-100 scale to various legal and illegal drugs, based on factors like how widespread the usage was, the health impact of using them, the negative effects on society, and so on. I think marijuana was somewhere down near a 15 or so...and alcohol was in the 80s.

Lol, reminds me of a story I read on Facebook the other day. This guy went up to his mother and told her he had tried marijuana, but didn't like it so much. She said she was the same way, he must have taken after her. Then she says "Good thing you didn't try cocaine, because I loved that ★■◆●."

legalized marijuana is just a fools gold dream. While you may be able to purchase it and use it. No company will hire you. because no insurance company will insure them. there is too much liability. if something goes wrong or someone gets injured they are out of business.

Cuda, I don't understand what you're worried about. Just because you drink beer doesn't mean you show up to work drunk. And my employer already knows that I occasionally imbibe, and I know that he does/has too. Again: Anyone who has both drunk alcohol and smoked marijuana knows which of these is safer.

That's a good point Cuda. Never considered that, but people should also be allowed to decide what they want out of this life. I've been watching Hillbilly Blood lately on TV, got to say I love the ingenuity those guys possess and they are not asking nothing from anyone. I would choose that life given half the chance and may just make my way to it.

once legalized, no insurance company could legally do so, I suspect. Sort of like how they cannot test for alcohol unless:1) the job entails extreme levels of focus or 2)employee shows signs of impairment at the job. They could use the results for private health insurance or life insurance rates, though, as they do for nicotene.

not true, there is a pre-employment screening, and as a private company they can still set requirements. every decent sized company has an employee handbook. in my company I can get terminated for private cellphone usage on company time. the company has the right to set what ever standards they want for their employees.

no it doesnt. BUT if you get injured on the job and they do a blood test and find out you have anything in your system. the company can be liable if they didn't have proper safeguards in place to warn the employee's against it, and potential any insurance payments could be denied because of it, and legal action against the company could result

FYI, I just received this email from my Corp HR person just a few minutes ago. and as a Department head I needed to know

Lots of questions coming in on this topic . . . please see below information.

The short answer is that just like Washington, Oregon is an At-will state, and marijuana is still illegal under FEDERAL LAW. Case law continues to allow Oregon and Washington Employers to ban Marijuana use, and to Not Hire and/or Terminate anyone who is found to be using or tests positive for marijuana. This applies to both Medical AND Recreational marijuana users.

At this time, our Substance Abuse and Testing policies will not change.

Please forward this to your Managers (and Employees if you wish) and let me know if you have any questions

Ugkh, I suppose that some occupations have worse policies for the reasons you outlined, but I think most of us--even in states where it hasn't been legalized yet--have employers who don't drug test against marijuana (or care what we do on our own time).

Just received this email from the Security Officer at my workplace, where a number of us have DoD security clearances:

Even though Amendment 64 has passed and the use of “Mary Jane” has been legalized in our great state of Colorado – you might think twice about pulling some “weed” and passing the “reefer”!

For those of you that have a clearance – a reminder….your clearance was NOT issued by the state of Colorado. Your clearance was granted at the Federal level. And if you aren’t aware – The Feds have NOT approved the “Ganja”.

If you partake in any form of the ‘grass’ or ‘marijuana’ for either pleasure or medicinal purposes – you MUST report to security.

This just might have an impact on your clearance!...and your job.

This is strictly from a security standpoint. HR may have a few things to add to this as well

I think this pretty well illustrates how this state legislation fits with federal law (i.e. it doesn't). I anticipate things being a little wacky between Colorado and Federal law enforcement for a while.

The national labs around here drug test, but they're surprisingly tolerant of alcoholism.
