Looks like she's been retired. a grand old lady

I'll never forget being out to sea off the coast of SoCal in 1981 and watching her come out of a fog bank at full speed. I was on watch on the bridge of my ship at the time. we had her tracking at almost 50 knots, 1087 foot long 90,000 tons of machine TEARING through the water at 60 MPH it was more then impressive.

51 years of service, that is impressive.

Also good to know it won't be the last ship carry the name "Enterprise".

If you'll remember, Chekov and Uhura stole power from the reactor of the USS Enterprise in the movie, Star Trek, The Voyage Home.

However, the ship that was used in the movie was of the USS Ranger, not the USS Enterprise. If you had been a USS Enterprise expert, you'd have notice that the "island" superstructure was not from the USS Enterprise. Oopsie.

It is kind of sad to see such a great ship have to retire though.

My best friend was serving on Ranger when that movie was filmed. not to mention that the deck configuration of Ranger is different then Enterprise..elevators are in different places. Ranger is a Forestal class Carrier, now moored in Bremmerton. Enterprise is the only ship of her class soon the be scrapped in Bremmerton.

Technically its the other way around, the reason the ship in Star Trek was called Enterprise was in reference to the real CVN-65 one.

Yeah, but the island is a very prominent feature. A little difficult to gloss over in a movie, although with CG, a whole fake USS Enterprise could be rendered to mask the difference.

So they're going to scrap her? Is the old girl just getting too expensive to maintain? They kept the Battleship Missouri as a museum piece, so why not the first nuclear powered aircraft carrier? That IS history.

they have to basically destroy her to get the reactors out.

I guess it's just the history of the name. CV-6 the most highly decorated ship of WW2 with 20 battle starts out a possible 22 during the war in the Pacific and at one time the ONLY carrier left to face the Japanese. ended up with the same fate. the scrap heap

Huh. Bremerton's close enough I've actually been there. Didn't see any carriers on that day though.
