I don't see the problem....

uproar ensues over NRA release of video game app:
http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/01 ... >1=43001
I don't get it. At all. I mean, damn, I sure hold the NRA responsible for a lot of issues around sensible gun laws, but this game seems aimed toward fostering responsible sportsmanship. No live targets(even deer, ducks or bunnies), apparently some attempt to teach safety. As I've stated on similarly unwarranted right wing outrage, I think the whining over this one is way out of line.

I think the outrage may be due to the fact they released this shortly after the last massacre. It's kinda tactless.

now, on another board, a recent veteran pointed out the use of a military weapon. I didn't catch that part, but still.... As far as timing, I suppose that has long been a bit of a problem for the NRA.

I'm not "outraged," per se, and I have no problem with the app itself, but it's massively hypocritical for the organization to spit out an unfounded spiel about how "violent media" is to blame for what happened, and then turn around and release something in that exact category all of a week or two later. Like, did they think they wouldn't get called on that?

That's my point, though, TG......a game teaching sportsmanship and shooting targets isn't VIOLENT. Not in any way, by any definiton I'd use.

Why so concerned with proper definitions and logic all of a sudden?

so let me get this right.
the NRA puts out an AP that teaches responsible gun handling and people get upset and call it hypocritical. but Hollywood and the gaming industry put out movies and Games depicting unnecessary gun violence and random brutal killing of people, and when the actors in those movies come out against Guns we hail them as hero's, and responsible citizens.

sort of......I think you get a bit too worked up over entertainment. If people didn't wish to see it, they wouldn't go to the movies, right?

Here's a pic of what their "targets" look like in the NRA's little gun game.
http://thinkprogress.org/politics/2013/ ... ?mobile=nc
They look a little like
coffin targets, with the bulls-eyes in the "head" and "heart" areas. Uh huh.

ever been to a boardwalk arcade, TC? I note your linkage from 'thinkprogress'. One of the big issues I've always had with some of my fellow progressives has been around making claims that border on hyperbole. Once you start making issues out of nothing, it makes it harder to acheive your goals when the issues are very real. That same problem is, of course, a huge stumbling block for the right, too.

Yeah, I know it's from ThinkProgress, and besides, you can find these pics all over the net, but why'd the NRA use coffin shapes for targets in that instance? Why not animal shapes or bulls-eyes if you want to practice gun use? It's kind of creepy.

Piss on PETA. How in the heck are people supposed to learn to hunt so that they can kill and eat meat protein. I don't go for that vegan crap. Human's are omnivores.

Tell me TC, do those targets in the app gush blood when you hit them? Does the app teach you how to kill other people? Let you sneak up and strangle of knife someone? Funny how when the NRA puts out a simple stylized target in the loose shape of a human form, the target turns in "coffin" shapes and the left is appalled. Wheres the complaints for movies like chain saw massacre or video games like sin city or jack this? Sadly TC you are being led around by the nose and seemingly don't even know it.

I've never seen a coffin shaped like that. Even if they can be construed as coffins, I'd like someone to tell me how that's anything but abstract. Heaven forbid this subliminal message play out and we have our next big shooting in a funeral home (where everybody's already dead)!
If you ask me it's a boxed-out torso. Maybe an attempt to make it a little less like a torso silhouette?

No, those targets don't gush blood and they are abstract. However, the resemblance is close enough, especially the locations of the "head" and "heart" main targets. But does that make a difference? They still look similar to coffins, or the NRA wouldn't have picked the shape. Isn't that a little sick to use those as targets when your group is trying to promote gun safety and training?
I agree with you that movies and TV shows have gratuitous violence. Some of it is way over the top and unnecessary. As an adult, I have the wisdom to know that it's entertainment, not reality and when to not bother watching it. So there are really only 2 solutions if you want to stop it. Ban ALL violent movies and tell those greedy movie producers they can go find another line of work, or tell parents that they can't let their kids watch those violent movies or they'll get arrested, because kids and adolescents are the ones who are not capable of discerning between make-believe violence and real violence. They're the ones who are most likely to act out based on a fantasy.

You need to go back and correct yourself on a number of things you said then. Or do your standards only apply to other people?

I've got news for you, TC. This is America, and you can't tell people what they will or will not expose their children to. You can't arrest people for something so abstract either. I have the liberty to determine my own destiny, and raise my own children without interference from a government that has outgrown its constitutional mandate. You really need to get that out of your vocabulary, so to speak. Frankly any social solution would be strange in a society who's primary pursuit has been to rid itself of inhibitions, with no thought for the consequences--only the pursuit of various lusts and expressions of abstract, shallow, ignorant uniqueness. There's a lot that needs to change before restriction on a child's consumption of violence in movies is a legitimate topic. That's like coming into a building that has not been kept up at all for the past 50 years and taking issue with the cleaning staff for dusting only once a week.

See, the people are already dead in the coffins so it isn't so bad....

Just pointing out, coffins are "people shaped" in case anyone missed that. The targets could have been abstracted further, but I assume the head/abdomen shape is used because that's what you would expect to see at a shooting range? I've never been to one, because they don't interest me. I'm going to assume a sizable amount of target practice around the world is conducted with human shaped targets.

Pretty sure it has to do with the irony inherent in all this.
An organization preaches against shooters, then releases a shooter app.
"um.. lol?"

So what, you want me to say "ZOMG THAT ED DUDE MADE AN AWFUL GAME THAT"S HORRIBLE!!1!1"? As if a single Internet nutjob is comparable to a national organization releasing an app a few days after their head makes the statements he did? Seriously Cuda, learn some freaking proportionality already. The reason no one mentioned that item is because no one either knew or cared about it.
