Just curious, what would be wrong with a counter-explanation that the folks in the elevator turned around because of face-to-face-with-strangers-uncomfortability?
I of course realize it wouldn't fit as a lead-in to neuron mimicry.

Also, consider what would happen in the southern or western states, where folks are more social. There could be a difference.

nicely spotted, Foil. Very good counter that I hadn't thought of before. Would be great if one of my students would actually come up with something like this
(also, I have watched it some many times now, I strongly suspect that at least parts of it are staged).
