The question I asked myself was "why"

It's like going back to the dirigible days... Without the cloaking thing you're nothing more than a big, giant, soft target.

I don't believe it would fly. Seems to be that big would require more power than 4 big fans.

The best concept for a flying aircraft carrier I've seen in fiction was basically a gigantic flying wing, to "land" all a fighter needed to do was match airspeed, set down on top of the wing, and use a hook to grab a stabilizing cable, the area where the planes land was an elevator that retracted inside and took the airplane to internal flight/storage decks.

Also even if the SHIELD carrier could fly, what would be the point? If you need to blow up something, just hover over it for a few seconds, the amount of thrust needed to lift something that heavy off the ground would be quite sufficient to destroy most structures beneath it even if you were hovering pretty high in the air. :P

Yeah, the noise and air-movement around it would negate the 'retro reflection panels' or whatever the cloak was called.

Besides, care to explain how it flew (or at least didn't flip upside-down) with two fans not working. My quad-copter is completely unable to fly if even one is non-functioning. Good luck there.

Back in the wars they did create composite aircraft.
Eh?

2:19 into it and i already hate these guys.. because they threw out half of the dynamics of a helicopter already.

so how can they say it's bunk when they disregard what they don't like?

these guys are idiots. LOL. Haven't they heard of carbo-titanium?

Clearly the blades were decoys for the ship's real propulsion system. Remember when one of the fans got blown up, making the whole thing fly on just 3? That's right, my fellow Descenticons, Samuel L. Jackson (Mace Windu) was lifting it with the force.

You know... the question was answered in an episode of Super Hero Squad show.

(link rigged to start video at the point the Helicarrier's ability to fly is explained at about 18:32).

Basically, the Helicarrier was never designed for speed and it's a physics paradox that it can even fly.

By the way, the little bot was loaned to them by the Fantastic Four.
