Anybody ever turn off the damn thing in Windows 7, or restrict what it can search?

Sure, I have it turned off on my backup drives, and any other drives I don’t search for files. If you turn it off on the drives you do file searches on…they can take forever.

Disabled for my SSD because it is irrelevant on one.

The reason I'm curious is that it appears that the Indexer on my gaming rig seems to like to "search and index" optical disks in my D drive when I open Explorer and click on the optical drive. It will sit there for a long time, searching I guess, before Explorer finally displays all the folders and files on the disk. It evens says "searching" in the pane above. I've looked in Index Options, but I can't find that drive selected. This is also one of may times the indexer has not released a registry handle upon shutdown, which invariably gives me the "temporary account" problem when booting the next day.

Search indexing should be automatically disabled and totally unavailable for the optical drive(s) in a system (hit properties on the drive letter and on the bottom of the general tab the options for search indexing/file compression shouldn't even be there on any optical drive). As for the "searching", if you have a disk in the drive it can take upwards of 10-15 seconds for some optical drives to spin up and read the contents of the disk within it. So the obvious solution is to not leave a disk in the drive except when you are actually using one, because explorer ignores empty drives.

Sounds like a bum DVD drive.

Or an hyperactive AV; I've seen them go crazy reading removable media and such, depending on settings.
