Russians Conduct Huge Nuke Drill
Russian nuclear forces hold large exercise involving movement of strategic and tactical warheads
BY: Bill Gertz
March 5, 2013 4:59 am
Russian nuclear forces conducted a major exercise last month that tested the transport of both strategic and tactical nuclear weapons near Europe, according to United States officials.
The exercise raised concerns inside the Pentagon and with the U.S. European Command because it was the largest exercise of its kind in 20 years and involved heightened alert status of Russian nuclear forces.
The nuclear drills were part of other military maneuvers in Russia carried out between Feb. 17 and Feb. 21.
The exercises followed a recent surge in Russian strategic bomber flights that include a recent circling of the U.S. Pacific island of Guam by two Tu-95 Bear bomber and simulated bombing runs by Tu-95s against Alaska and California in June and July...

Hey, you know it's all bluster and is meaningless right? Those bombers were relics and their nuclear forces are aging like ours. Can they really be reliable? Does Putin really mean it?
Meanwhile here at home, Obama appointed Defense(less) Secretary Chuck "No Nukes" Hagel and Secretary of State John "Americans have a right to be stupid" Kerry. What messages are being sent back and forth between nuke powers?

Russia the nuclear power therefore carried out and will carry out military exercises and weapon tests. I will remind that to the USSR urgently I became the nuclear power because the USA in 1945 began to bomb the peace cities nuclear bombs. Russia has no need to attack anybody, at us and so more than there is a lot of all - and the earth and energy resources. And here the USA are sense to attack Russia. Russia is compelled to increase the military potential and to create new arms for balance of forces in reply to NATO expansion.
http://ru.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?tit ... 5&stable=1 Besides, the nuclear weapon the increasing number of the countries owns. Which too carry out nuclear tests.

Or Obama believes the unicorns and candycanes coming out his butt will make everyone a nice happy global family of socialist nations.
LYONS: Obama’s dangerous anti-nuclear obsession
Diminished U.S. deterrence means a more unstable world
Potential U.S. adversaries have been flexing their military muscles of late, taking provocative action that is specifically directed against the United States and our allies. These actions have important strategic significance. In light of our unilateral disarmament, our potential adversaries are clearly testing our resolve and our military readiness to respond, as well as the Obama administration’s reaction.
On Feb. 15, investigative journalist Bill Gertz reported that two Russian Bear-H Tu-95 strategic strike bombers equipped with nuclear-tipped cruise missiles circumnavigated Guam on Feb. 12 in what can only be categorized as a reconnaissance-simulated strike mission. At some point, they were intercepted by U.S. Air Force F15s operating out of Guam.
It appears to be more than mere coincidence that this provocative mission occurred just “hours” before President Obama’s State of the Union address. Further, it cannot be ignored that this first-of-a-kind mission over vast ocean areas occurred on the same day that North Korea detonated its third underground nuclear device.
Clearly, the Russian strategic bomber flights cannot be viewed as an isolated event. Last summer, Russia sent an Akula class cruise-missile attack submarine to the Gulf of Mexico and operated undetected for an unspecified period of time. We did not find out it was there until after it departed. With Iran’s missile base in Venezuela now operational, according to former ambassador Roger Noriega, the Akula deployment takes on added significance.

Any Russian moves are probably in response to what’s going on in NK, and the saber rattling going on there.
NK is threatening to end the ceasefire accord with SK if the US forces continue their war games in that region.
Some pretty blatant talk by NK.

also, Spidey, given the huge shared border with China, and the age and track record of Russian military hardware, keeping in practice doesn't seem to be irresponsible nor terribly threatening to the US whatsoever.

Call though one reason, why the territory of the USA is necessary to Russia? All conversations on threat for the USA from Russia, are started only when it is necessary to allocate even more money of the American taxpayers for military expenses which are allegedly necessary for compensation of the invented danger from Russia. And blind it is visible that actually "the Russian threat" is whose that quite good business in the USA =)

sigma, I wish we had a better translation of your thoughts because it looks like you have an interesting perspective but some of the phrases you have posted apparently didn't translate very well from your native language.
For example: "
Call though one reason,"....and..."
And blind it is visible" .....
"is whose that quite good business in the USA "

Feel free to correct my rough translation here, Sigma:
sigma [Foil's rough translation] wrote:Give me a reason, why would Russia be interested in the US?
All this talk of a Russian threat is being invented for purposes of pushing US military spending. Even a blind person can see that "the Russian threat" is good business for some in the USA. =)
------
Personally, although I don't believe it's a military-spending conspiracy, I think sigma is correct that there is no threat directed at the US. I also think Spidey is likely correct that North Korea's saber-rattling is driving some of this.

Sigma-
It is not Russia that we fear. It is Putin that we fear. The Russian people are very nice- but the leadership is pushing and making threats against the USA.
It is Vladimir Putin, not Russia.

Yes, Foil, you much better understood sense of that I wanted to tell. Thanks for correct translate. Online translators Google and the PROMT badly cope with the functions, unfortunately.
ThunderBunny, I think, won't be mistake to tell that irrespective of who at us is a President, the foreign policy of our country never was and hardly will be is directed on a invasion of any other country. We have too many internal problems. I personally am disturbed by enormous inflow of migrants to Russia together with growth of corruption much more.
Modernization and upgrade weapons, as well as increasing the number of military exercises and tests of more modern weapons recently in our country - it is a natural and necessary measure to keep the army in constant readiness. Nothing strange here.

I really appreciate his perspective. To say sigma is more likely to be right about the intentions of his country and ours is as fallacious as saying the same about an American. I believe his post sheds ample light on the ridiculousness of any official U.S. concerns, but that we shouldn't rule out any possible alternative interests which may drive two countries into conflict. Myself, I find Russia's news perspective on the U.S. to be enlightening--refreshingly devoid of U.S. spin, but that doesn't make the Russian government a bunch of saints.
