Tracking Speed

A little math question to stretch your brain. In Eve I have fitted a sniper ship. The guns track at .004 radians/sec. At 230k meters what is the fastest speed of a target at that range with 90 deg transversal will the guns track?

length = diameter x pi x degrees/360
So if I'm doing this right, about 920 meters per second.

Your gun tracking at 0.004 radians/second means that it takes you pi / 0.004 = 250 * pi seconds to turn it 180 degrees. The length of a semicircle (a 180 degree arc) with radius 230,000 meters is 230,000 * pi meters. So at distance 230,000 meters, you can track at 230,000 * pi / (250 * pi) = 920 meters per second.

Unless something has changed in Eve in the last couple of years, you won't be able to hit anything capable of moving that fast because of the signature radius of the ship compared to your guns.

Really? Saw a Tempest insta-pop a Dramiel that was a lot closer than 230k.

What class is that ship?
I have not played in years.

Tempest is a Minmatar class battleship and the Dramiel is a pirate faction frigate class vessel.

Ah. Well sometimes all it takes is one lucky volley. But I wouldn't count on it happening too regularly.
