Sounds pretty cool to me. Such misunderstanding of the word hack these days...

Only a Windows user would think being "open to hackers" means unsecure.

There are much
larger implications to these things than you think.
It also seems that Google will be able to control them remotely as well. With google having no problems data mining wireless networks from the their image cars... yeah.. not getting these.

Yet you have no problem with people carrying smartphones... Glass is an under powered device that can be modded with ease. Smatphones are powerful devices that can be modified with ease. You freak out over nothing.

1, I don't have a cell phone
2. I know you love everything google.
3. They've shown they can't be trusted with tech.
I'm not trying to stop them coming out. It's the next logical progression in communication tech.
But they're going about it foolishly. AND you're part of the generation that has no problem throwing away their privacy.

As Isaac points out - what's the difference between this and smartphones?
Understand this: someone (or many people) has complete and unlimited control over every single one of your computing devices. The Google glass being rootable means that the user can choose to take that control for themselves rather than simply leave it in the Google god's hands. (Though, evidently, the Google gods aren't completely giving up their control)
So, in a sense, leaving it rootable means that the user potentially has more power to take data away from Google than they would otherwise.

open to hackers = awesome.
I'm interested in these glasses as a module for telemetry readouts for RC aircraft and surface vehicles.

You don't walk around with your phone out in front of you with the camera active all the time. And there are several folks where I work that are a bit unsettled by the fact that "everyone" has a cell phone. They're all over 40 and all remember a time when you could actually be unreachable. But I'm sure that most wouldn't agree with that.

It's easy to be unreachable. Turn off the phone. This usually means the GPS is off too. If you are worried it's not, take the battery out.

That's the thing vision. When you turn the phone off, you're not really turning it off. you're just putting it in standby mode. So everything you think is off is still on. So now you're either left with pulling the battery or taking the phone apart to remove the battery.

Leave your phone at home then!
Or just don't answer it if it's the unreachability that you want.

Exactly. Duper is pretending people aren't already using their phones like this.
^ Duper never complained about that
Anyone can buy this bluetooth headsets for your bluetooth compatible phone, laptop, or webserver.
Duper has never complained about these, though they do the exact same thing.
There's also hundreds of bluetooth cameras out there that can be misused for this, that are designed to be hidden while recording. But will Duper complain about those? Nope. Not a word...

Keep it civil Isaac. Duper has a valid point, and the ad hominem only makes you look like a fanatic

You never presented anything to address Duper's concerns. You just busted out some
logical fallacies.
The fact that there exists other bluetooth cameras has no bearing on Duper's spying concerns wrt google glass being end-user modifiable.

Pfft, I've said this before but privacy only exists to the point it is respected. Might as well get used to that, only thing that goes in our favor is there are so many people, but if you are ever targeted, game over.
Duper, I remember those days! I was the last person on the jobsite to have a cellphone, by years
. If the super ever wanted to talk to me, he had to get in his truck and drive to my jobsite. Consequently, I rarely had to see him! It was a losing battle though.

I think Ferno was referring to this semi-HNB thread and not the article. I'm glad you don't have Facebook. It sucks.

I just barely started using it this semester for my school club I joined. I have five classmates friended as a result. Then I ended up friending three old friends... I'm determined to stop there. I did friend a new friend I made at school, though. But no more. That was the last one.

I have facebook, but everything on it is of obvious fakeness (obvious because that way I can lie while still being honest, and I love contradictions!) and I've barely used it for years...

Alter-fox, I did a quick 5 minute investigation on you to see if I could find your true identity.... I believe you are:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aaron_Funk
Re: Google Glasses Left Hackable
Posted: Thu May 02, 2013 9:29 pm
by Alter-Fox
Nope. Not even close.
You wouldn't find me because there are a huge number of more well-known people (mostly from the Czech Republic) who have my exact name. And I've left scant few traces of my true identity on the internet at all. There are only two people online who know my real name, and that was only because they were (or still are) technically my employers. I'm certainly not on wikipedia!

Funk is a name from the Czech Republic? Or did you mean Aaron?
Here are drivers testing the Google Glass maps app:

I told you you were wrong. Not even close. That's not a name I've ever heard.
The stuff about the Czech Republic was a hint, because I love guessing games and mysteries far too much for my own good. So if you want to guess my name, be my guest. I'll even tell you if you get it right (but I'll tell you privately, even though a name by itself wouldn't give away very much about me
). We might want to start a new thread for that though... There's in fact one musician who is probably more well known than I am who has my exact name (which is the real reason I insist on being known, musically, only as Vertigo Fox) and another somewhat well known electronic musician who uses the same DAW that I do, whose name (which could be a pseudonym) is only one letter different from mine.
And if you want
one more cryptic clue I will give you
one more. Rule of three. And the third one will require a little bit of research.
I have to admit it's kind of satisfying to see someone try to guess something about me and be so completely wrong. I guess I really do know how to be mysterious.
BTW by my knowledge of names that are common in different parts of Europe, Aaron sounds like more of a Norwegian name (or maybe Swedish or Swiss) than a Czech one. I have done some research, when I was writing a short story which took place partly in Norway and had two major characters from there. I certainly wouldn't mind sharing that story, but it's wierd... I also had to research Greek mythology and the lore of a couple of mythical beasts -- as detailed as I possibly could find.

If you don't mind me being systematic about guessing your name, let me eliminate a few of the big ones: Is your name Czech or Republic?

Probably not

But I didn't say I'd tell you if you were wrong... only if you were right.
