A 46-year-old soccer referee who was punched by a teenage player during a game and later slipped into a coma has died, police said.

Ricardo Portillo of Salt Lake City passed away at the hospital, where he was being treated following the assault last weekend, Unified police spokesman Justin Hoyal said Saturday night.

Police have accused a 17-year-old player in a recreational soccer league of punching Portillo after the man called a foul on him and issued him a yellow card.

Or at least pass a new law to prevent this thing from ever happening again. Too many people have died because of un disciplined children. Tha madness has got to stop.

On a serious note sad story. The reality of how our choices can affect us and others for the rest of our lives

I think all people getting involved in sports need to have a mental background check. You know a goodly percentage of our youth (especially boys) are put on mood controlling drugs. We need to keep these individuals out of sports to protect the adults who may have to discipline them.

on a far more serious note, regarding the young males of America, I read an article the other day in Fortune magazine that was alarming. It was discussing the growing discrepancy between males and females in educational outcomes. Currently, women/girls are 33% more likely to get college degrees. At the present, a college degree(despite much bad mouthing of higher ed, costs, loans etc) yields the greatest economic return in history, with a 40 year income/cost ratio of $750,000/120,000. The most alarming part of the article was where it was noted that ever-increasing numbers of young American boys/men are choosing to not be employed in ANY gainful fashion. The theories ranged from higher numbers of single-parent households to cultural influences, and beyond, but stop and think about that......We could be a generation, or at best two, from essentially a matriarchal society.

I think that's entirely up to you....... :)

which one? Mine, which wonders where the young males of the US are headed, or the OP, which tries to equate(for the umpteenth time) some ridiculous side issue stemming from a tragedy to the rational control of firearms distribution?

Well since slick will do nothing but demonize anything everyone says that doesn't fall inline with his propaganda and then personally attack any one that says anything he disagrees with, I defer to his OBVIOUS moral superiority on every subject. I wouldn't wish to appar like a coward and actually discuss an issue instead of attacking individual posters and attempting to change the subject.

And, if the anti-gun kooks weren’t trying to create hysteria…the pro-gun nuts wouldn’t have to resort to satire in an attempt to show the folly.

But I have to say…I doubt it will be effective, because it’s much easier to get people hyped up, than to calm them down.

The only real hysteria is being created by flaming assholes like Wayne Lapierre.

yup, pass a law to get government to parent children, and when that goes wrong.. blame the government for not having stricter laws.

here's a novel idea.. how about the parents disipline the kids when they are being little shits.

"Well since slick will do nothing but demonize anything everyone says that doesn't fall inline with his propaganda and then personally attack any one that says anything he disagrees with" Really.. he hasn't pulled that on me when i've disagreed with him.

Ummm Ferny, when slick first came to this board you had said something about his bringing "intelligent discussion" to this board. From then on I always kinda looked at you as his familiar.

For the most part I agree with you. I have to wonder though, if schools aren't pushing college too much. Do schools still have industrial trades classes? Get a good trade and income is not all that bad. Look up what a good auto mechanic makes if you don't believe me. In short between getting boys hooked on Ritalin does not help:

"Twenty percent of American male students and more than 10% of students overall have been diagnosed as having attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, according to a recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "

“Those are astronomical numbers. I’m floored,” said Dr. William Graf, a pediatric neurologist in New Haven and a professor at the Yale School of Medicine. He added, “Mild symptoms are being diagnosed so readily, which goes well beyond the disorder and beyond the zone of ambiguity to pure enhancement of children who are otherwise healthy.”

"James Swanson, a professor of psychiatry in Florida International University, says that recent diagnoses numbers simply don’t pass the smell test. He says that there’s no way that one out of five high school males is really afflicted with ADHD rather than just having some difficulty controlling his impulses. He says that over-medicating kids with stimulants like Adderall is just setting them up with problems for life — including addiction and abuse."

So once again we have a system more interested in medicating students than in what is really best for their well being. I have to wonder if this is not part of the problem Slick posts about.

Like the other day he compared me to Ayn Rand…who I don’t find all that horrible…but obviously he does.

Then when asked how my example was analogues to government by a small group...the old silence is golden technique.

Ferno, I'm afraid there is an incongruity between what you like to think your relationship with slick is, and what is observed. Slick obviously gives you room in an argument, and you reciprocate. If you're going to be teacher's pet, don't try to pretend like teacher loves everyone the same. It's disingenuous.

"Familiar"! LOL! Damn accurate, though. :P
