Hmmm
Replace falling down garage.
Pave muddy driveway.
Jack up house, replace stone foundation with new full basement & saferoom.
Gut & remodel interior of house.
Two new vehicles.
Bass boat.
New awesome gaming rig.
Then, providing anything is left after the gaming rig (which may cost more than all previous items)
the rest can go in savings.

Buy a piece of land (100K-300K)
Buy a pickup truck (10K)
Build a house (200K)
Build a pole-barn/workshop (20K)
Build a fast computer (5K)
Start a web-design business, a small fabricating business, and a survival/camping group/school.
Last on the list would be put a mid-size sailboat on one of the Great Lakes.

I had a friend that won a medical malpractice suit. Long story short, a doctor of over 50 years gave him a flu shot in a vein instead of an artery and he ended up losing all the fingers on one hand. Anyways, his settlement ended up being around half a million and the interest he gained was around 660 dollars a week. If what he said is true, I would put the whole million in a bank and live off the interest.
Re: You have $1Million, after tax.
it is a pity that to the Russian measures of 1 million dollars it is absolutely small money. In general, I would like to treat for diseases of people which have no opportunity to afford the treatment necessary to them. Perhaps, small private charitable hospital.
Re: You have $1Million, after tax.
1 million Dollars is 31,711,700.00 Rubles. This is not a lot in russia?

It is very small. For example, the average cost of a conventional two-room apartment on the outskirts of the city in Moscow (80 sqm, without repair, unfurnished) is $ 375,000 or 11.15 million rubles.

Re: You have $1Million, after tax.
The cost of purchasing a two-bedroom apartment is small? That's a large expense, many times the annual income for most people.
Re: You have $1Million, after tax.
Oh, long to explain it. Conditionally speaking, I catastrophically don't have money at my salary of 110 thousand rubles for residence in Moscow. Thus that my girl too works, I have apartment, a country house and two cars therefore we don't buy anything especially expensive. And nevertheless..
Re: You have $1Million, after tax.
So what you're saying is, for $1 million dollars I could buy 98 two bedroom apartments in Russia, but it's not considered a lot. If your apartment is 110,000 rubles, with $1 million dollars I could buy 336 apartments of the same value. $1 million seems to do pretty well in russia.

Re: You have $1Million, after tax.
No. To open a business here, bringing a steady income, $ 1 million is clearly insufficient. The most reliable investment that will bring income, it is only in real estate. So I need to earn at least another two apartments at 15 million rubles each, only in order not to think about poverty in old age. And only then I can start thinking about the charity, which I will spend $ 1 million, which I win the lottery.
Re: You have $1Million, after tax.
Sigma, just to clear things up, I checked to see what the average income was in russia and it's only $11,000 USD a year. That's less than minimum wage in the USA. So $1 million dollars appears to be a fortune to the average Russian. Sorry, sigma, I'm not sure what you're talking about when you say it's a small amount in Russia. It's a huge amount there.

Isaac, no. The average cost of an apartment on the outskirts of Moscow, an area of 80 square meters - $ 375,000. My salary now (without bonuses) - 110 thousand rubles. For Moscow, it is below average earnings. Good salary in Moscow is considered to be 300-500 thousand rubles. The fact is that there is a very big contrast between Moscow and Russia. In the province of salary of 50 thousand rubles have already been considered not bad. Therefore, for the province of one million dollars is certainly a decent amount. For Moscow, it is a little.

Re: You have $1Million, after tax.
I know I wrote a lot, but please take the time to read it, sigma.
sigma, I don't want to call you a liar, but I think you are mistaken when saying this about $ 1 million:
I calculated this by dividing the ruble equivalent of 1 Million dollars by your salary: 31,700,000/110,000=2881.82 years
If 110,000 is your monthly salary, it would take you 240 years to make the equivalent of $1 million dollars.
2,881.82 months/12=240.15 years
There's no way you think $1 million dollars is a small sum of money. $1 million dollars if a fortune for you.
Assuming this is an annual salary, without spending any money it would take this wage earner 31.7 years to have $ 1 million dollars. 31,700,000/10,000,000=31.7 years
If this is monthly salary it would take them 2.6 years to make $1 million dollars. (31700000/1000000)/12=2.6 years
This wage earner would also consider $1 million dollars to be a lot of money.
Am I misunderstanding something? Please point out any math errors I have made. If there aren't any, please make a statement about the calculations above. Thank you.

I think he is thinking that 1 dollar = 1 ruble, when in fact, 1 dollar = 31.92 rubles, so, $1,000,000 will equal 31,924,700 rubles.
Re: You have $1Million, after tax.
No. in Russia when people talk about his salary, we always mean earnings for 1 month. To understand that Moscow is perhaps the city most expensive to accommodation in the world, it is rather simple to arrive here. I would call the sum in 10 million dollars which by the opportunities can be considered here as an equivalent of 1 million dollars in the USA. It is the fact.

I said that by the standards of Moscow is my salary is not considered a good income. $ 1 million are the insufficient sum which can be considered here as the pink dream or that my friends could say that I am a wealthy man.
P.S. it's hard to explain, but if so it will be more clear, there is a big difference between what we get paid, and how much we actually earn.

I think we are dealing with semantics here for the words "a lot". Sigma appears to mean "enough to be powerful / influential", whereas you appear to mean "significantly more than average".
Re: You have $1Million, after tax.
ahaha , it's all. We will not talk about the amount of income that the officials have, okay? Let's just say, for the average person $ 1 million is a substantial sum, but for the middle class is the sum is not sufficiently attractive.Isaac wrote:Are you talking about government provisions?
it can be told and so. The representatives of small business we have a very precise definition in this respect - the man with the sum of less than 2 million dollars of no interest to anyone - neither bandits nor racketeers in authority.Foil wrote:I think we are dealing with semantics here for the words "a lot". Re: You have $1Million, after tax.
Issac, you're just doing the math. But there's a very different culture in Russia than there is in North America. There are a lot of places in the world where money doesn't mean the same thing as it does where we live. It's complicated to explain and I don't know enough about these complex social issues to explain well, so I'll explain badly and probably miss several key things and be completely wrong.
In a police state, the value of money in terms of anything other than the power to buy what the government lets you buy is probably going to be very limited. And if you consider that the government might only let you buy a certain amount of those things, then the value of having more money is pretty much nil, and it might even draw unwanted attention from less legal parts of society. It might even be more valuable to have a little less.

exactly. The most difficult thing we have - it does not make money, but explain from where you have so much money. Although all understand each other perfectly.
Re: You have $1Million, after tax.
So the reason 31.7 million rubles (~1 million USD) isn't worth a lot is because there's nothing to buy with that kind of money? That makes no sense to me at all...

Still, Sigma, ignoring all that, if you did have 31.7 million rubles and no restrictions, what would you buy with it? That's the question of the day. Or of the thread, as the case may be.

No, Isaac, in order to buy a BMW X6 (by the way, the most popular car in Moscow for wealthy) and to move to the area with good ecology and not feel inferior to others for a while, is quite enough 1 million dollars. But to make something really useful, of it there is nothing even to think, you will be gobbled up by officials with such ridiculous sum. At us, unlike you, do not help the business, and all try any methods to break off it on pieces, having torn off itself a piece more if the businessman is insufficiently rich and has no communications in the power as it is sad.
Re: You have $1Million, after tax.
I live in the poorest part of Texas and I see BMWs parked in people's driveways, though I'm sure they're neck deep in debt.
