We are Dying

Post by woodchip »

According to Reid and Obama our economy was supposed to die when funding for govt. shut down. It is so bad I see the Dow is up 30 points.

So the market went down, then up. You guys really take these little movements as indicative of long-term impact?

apparently. I repositioned my portfolio for the coming 'debt ceiling' mess, but not for a govt shutdown. The latter is fecking with a planned fishing trip(destination is a National Seashore). As I stated before, however, the markets hate uncertainty, and thats what the loony right provides in spades. Funny how Woody jumps up and down over a 1/2% gain which follows a 5 day drop of 2%.

I think it's a funny coincidence that Google has a Yosemite Anniversary doodle on the same day the government get's shut down by intransigent Republicans, who we know hate those Federal National Parks and would rather see private enterprise be allowed to cut the trees, drill for oil and mine for minerals AND not pay a dime back to the taxpayer for the privilege. :P

not really. Just reflects short term uncertainty. Today's rise was likely because business numbers looked so good(you know, from the failing recovery), that they outweighed the uncertainty. The debt ceiling thing the last time caused around a 16% drop, and another one would likely do likewise. Remember, the last time they didn't actually default, but now these loons seem capable or even gleeful about following through to default(which, as I noted elsewhere is technically forbidden by the 14th amendment). If we default, even for a day, our economy is cooked. Long-term, possibly forever. No I do not think I am overdramatizing. Why? Because the rock-solid credit of the US and the solidity of the currency are cornerstones upon which the entire national economy rests. If they crumble, what is on top of them could easily collapse.

I think it's funny the politicians get a 75% subsidy for Obama care when they make 174k a year...at the taxpayer's expense.

Yeh, that really stinks, I agree. If what they have is so good for them, why didn't the lawmakers give US what they have when they had the chance, hmmmmmm? What really stinks is the fact these bastards are keeping their paychecks while the government is shut down and every other employee is furloughed. I say, no workie, workie, no checkie, checkie.

Here's my idea, since all these stupid babies are behaving like 2 siblings fighting over the territory in the back seat of the family car. Throw them all into one big, padded room with no pay, no food and especially, NO alcohol. Just some hard chairs, water and one porta potty. They can't come out of their time-out room until they can play nice, get the job we hired them to do done, and get along. :P

don't be delusional, CUDA.....this mess is at the feet of one part of one party. That group spent 6 months preventing conference seating to negotiate the House and Senate appropriation bills. That group has caused this recent mess, and is threatening to cause default. For what? And then, they try to make it seem like no one wants to 'negotiate'? Someone I read earlier put it best:

"I want to burn your house down'

No

'Then, let me just burn the 2nd floor'

No

"Then how about just burning the garage and kitchen'

No

'Well, what can I burn down??'

Nothing

"You won't NEGOTIATE!!!!"

This is NOT how you revise legistation that has passed. This is NOT how the legislative process was designed to operate. This is, in fact, senseless irresponsibility, bordering on treason(they did take an oath to uphold the Constitution and protect the nation). And, while there are plenty of reasons to have issues with either party, this mess is at the feet of ONE party, which cannot control it's extremist wing.

Funny that the only party saying they will not negotiate is your party. No attempt at all. Not one. Not only that they go all let them eat cake and exempt themselves from this fantastic better then sliced bread law that they have touted and made us live by. Not to mention the rhetoric they choose. Seems you can call a republican a jihadist, but not the actual jihadist. Classy act there by your party.

now lets try the "its the law of the land" tact which they are now so fond of.
seems the president feels he's above the constitution and the law. Since he is giving executive orders re-writing his own legislation. FYI he doesn't have that authority. Congress writes the laws. He enforces them. Thats how it works.

The last proposal that the house offered was a full funding of the Demcare as long as they took away the "do as I say not as I do exemption". And gave the people the same one year waver that the Democrats gave Large corporations. Since by the look of things most states weren't ready for its implementation anyway it would have been the smart thing to do. but then we are talking about our Government. they don't usually do the smart thing

but you go ahead and keep lying to yourself and us by saying that the Republicans wouldn't negotiate. some how I don't think your grasp of English is very good on this matter. a negotiation is a compromise, and the only ones not willing to compromise are the King and his Court jester.

ne·go·ti·ate   (n-gsh-t)

v.

To confer with another or others in order to come to terms or reach an agreement: "It is difficult to negotiate where neither will trust"(Samuel Johnson).

v.

To arrange or settle by discussion and mutual agreement:

After leading the Democrat-dominant Senate to vote against the House-approved continuing resolution (CR) spending measure -- which included a one-year delay in implementing Obamacare -- along party lines (54-46), Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said, “We are not going to negotiate on this” legislation.
so who's not negotiating again??

That's NOT what Republicans are doing. Their stance is, and always has been, that they won't talk or come to terms UNLESS an already negotiated and decided law is either tossed out, or delayed, or taken down piece by piece. You'll notice that these guys keep referring to it as a BILL. It's now a LAW you morons! The house is already built and they want to tear it down stick by stick because they don't like the paint job!

What they're doing now with their little fund-bits-of-the-government-here-and-there-that-will-make-THEIR-constituents-happy is only a transparent face saving, blame everything on the Dems measure. It ain't gonna work. We see you! Either they fund the government in it's entirety for now and initiate a special session to deal with the ACA, or they don't. The Dems have to quit caving into their tantrums like consoling parents. The usual caving in by the Dems is pissing me off. Spank the dam brat for once! He needs it!

They had their chance to stop things when the DEBATE over the BILL occurred years ago, when it was in the proper sphere in committee and on the floor. IF they really want to get rid of Obamacare, fine, that's their prerogative, they don't like it. But they need to get control of both houses AND the presidency IN AN ELECTION, THEN pass legislation to that effect. If all Americans hate Obamacare like they say we do, they should have no trouble getting representatives and a president in their party elected next time around. Otherwise, they need to quit being jackasses and trashing the government.

Somebody got pissed off today.

So will it turn out that the shooter was a right wing gun nut, or a meek and wussy liberal? He's in custody at least and one captial guard was only injured in the fracas.

As slick and TC both put it, dealing with a group whose only priority is destroying your stuff isn't "negotiation." There isn't anything to discuss. You don't stamp your feet and throw a temper tantrum just because a law you don't like is on the books. If the Republicans want to delay or repeal parts of the law, they can try to win enough seats in Congress in 2014 to override a veto, or else go for the presidency in 2016. (Good luck with either of those.) That's how these things work, and how they've always worked.
