What are the Chinese saying?

When they publish things like this:

Image
On Monday, leading media outlets including China Central TV, the People’s Daily, the Global Times, the PLA Daily, the China Youth Daily and the Guangmin Daily ran identical, top-headlined reports about the “awesomeness” of the People's Liberation Army navy’s strategic submarine force.

“This is the first time in 42 years since the establishment of our navy’s strategic submarine force that we reveal on such a large scale the secrets of our first-generation underwater nuclear force,” the Global Times said in a lengthy article titled “China for the First Time Possesses Effective Underwater Nuclear Deterrence against the United States.”

The article features 30 photos and graphics detailing, among other things, damage projections for Seattle and Los Angeles after being hit by Chinese nuclear warheads and the deadly radiation that would spread all the way to Chicago.

Do we, as Americans, publish nuclear strike maps of China or Russia in major newspapers as a point of 'pride?'

The Chinese see us as their enemy. They're advertising it all over the world- and how they can destroy their enemy.

What is our administration's response?
The Obama administration declined to comment on Sunday on provocative state-run Chinese media reports outlining Beijing’s nuclear war plans, including land-based and submarine-launched missile strikes on U.S. cities that would kill up to 12 million people.

State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf and Pentagon spokeswoman Cynthia Smith would not respond when asked about the highly unusual Chinese reports published Oct. 28 in numerous major Communist Party-controlled television and newspaper outlets.

The Chinese reports included maps showing nuclear strikes on Los Angeles and the Pacific Northwest, along with the resulting radiation plumes stretching thousands of miles across the western United States.

Global Times, viewed as China’s most xenophobic anti-U.S. media outlet, stated in its report that “the 12 JL-2 [submarine-launched ballistic missile] nuclear warheads carried by one single Type 094 SSBN can kill and wound 5 million to 12 million Americans.” The newspaper is a subsidiary of the People’s Daily, the organ of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party.

Granted, not much can be done- but at least our government could at least come out with a statement about how wrongheaded and belligerent this is on China's part.

The Chinese government clearly cares nothing for human life and this is just one more blaring advertisement made around the world to that effect.

You believe that kind of response wouldn't increase tensions?

Completely idiotic. No country in the world will attack us because it will mean the end of theirs.

I wish I could figure out what TB has positive feelings towards. Hates America. Hates Muslims. Hates Russians and Chinese. How about puppies? Do you like puppies TB? Bunnies and kitties? How about a nice post from you with some cute little critters for a change?

that's wishful thinking. Iran has been doing it for decades and we have done nothing about it.

Cuda's right.

While the Chinese people on the whole are wonderful folk, their government is exceedingly paranoid and waste no time vilifying us to their young starting in grade school.

How do I know this? In my early attempts so learn Mandarin, I started with Chinese children's primers as I wanted to learn to read and write at the same time as well as speak. Much of their early reading primers uses us as bad guys.

Just because we have businesses over there, don't be fooled. If they think that they could easily get the upper hand in a conflict, I don't think that they would hesitate to press that.

Oh and to answer the question, do we publish ..... as a matter of pride. Not as such, but are you guys aware of the Battlefield 4 story premise? This kinda response is not surprising.

Seriously. We still use Russians and Chinese as our bad guys in pop culture, they both use us, and at the end of the day no one really gives a crap. China's economy is so intertwined with ours that the idea of taking any of this bluster remotely seriously is just laughable.

It's not far off the mark.

So long as they can be deterred- yes.

Right now the Chinese see weakness in America and are willing to take what they can get away with in terms of territorial gain- and they're not afraid to bully and intimidate others to get it.

Japan's territory- along with others are being coveted and claimed by China. Just take a look:

Image

You can see all sorts of wild claims being made by China.

For example:

China lays claim to Okinawa as territory dispute with Japan escalates

China questions Japan's sovereignty over Ryukyu islands, heightening tension over existing Senkakus islands dispute

The Philippines:

Vietnam:

Vietnam's Leader Rubbishes Beijing's South China Sea Claims

In Chinese eyes- we're the only thing between them and their 'rightful' territorial claims.

If Obama shrinks from our allies- the more aggressive China will be.

They won’t have to make war with us…as soon as they have a large enough consumer base…all they have to do is stop buying our debt…and poof…there goes America down the drain.

The only reason they buy so much of it now is, they need the American consumer.

And all that BS about all we have to do is default on those T-Bills is just that…BS…because that would mean a stop to all of that cash.

And you believe the Chinese publishing their nuclear strike targets is not being provocative and warrants no response?

Are you implying Iran has attacked us militarily? That's what this thread is about; military attacks (thus, nukes). We have been continuously waging a harsh economic and cyber war against Iran for years and from the looks of it we have the upper hand.

"A Game of Shark and Minnow:"

Always has been, always will be. Also, America's demise does not necessarily mean the destruction of all others either.

I'm curious what you think we should all do as a response? Should we destroy a small Chinese city with a low yield nuke? What will make you crazy people happy? Maybe we could just nuke a small, useless country every six months! Oh yes, that will make everyone be our friends! No one will hate us then!

I think a calculated and equitable response. Hell, China sent ships to the Persian Gulf to 'observe' the US, while at the same time the are bullying every single sovereign nation for lunch money that exists in the South China Sea. We all know that the shark will go for easier prey as long as there is a more dominant shark in the area. You guys want to equate us to animals all the time don't even take that aspect into account in situations like this.

I'm asking you what that calculated and equitable response is flip? And, oh my god, they observed US ships in international waters? How dare they get away with such deliberate acts of nothing?

Just as any other species would. Plus, I would have expected you to understand that the fact they observed was second or third to the point.

yeah, it is a bit over the top. But on 2 fronts I think the attitude if compared to their government is about spot on.
Also, I think it's overstating to make a point; make people aware of a real problem.

but whatever. *shrug*

So what is that equitable action?

They have rudimentary drawings. That's it. Somehow that worries you? You don't realize how crazy it is to think the US should do something in response to a few pictures? Change the location of the west coast? Tell China to stop drawing pictures and putting targets on it?

No idea what you're saying dude. Grow up a little bit.

I don't think we were the intended audience. I'm sure they know that being able to nuke a few large cities isn't very impressive by global standards in 2013. This is a government who's primarily trying to stay relevant among their *own* people.

You rural conservatives just happen to live downwind from anything that goes off on the west coast. I'd rather be nuked outright and die instantly then live in a post-apocalyptic irradiated wasteland inhabited by dog eat dog tea partiers who now have to fight off Chinese invaders. :P

Wouldn’t the Chinese have to wait 10,000 years to invade?

I say we send in our “yawning squad” you know my standard send in 10 or so diplomats, have them meet with the highest officials that will meet with them…then on cue they all look at the ceiling have a big hand over the mouth yawn…and leave.
