With Obama ordering the lowering of the flags to half mast in tribute to Mandela, I have to wonder if he would of done the same if Mandela was white. When the white Iron Lady Thatcher died no flags were lowered even though she was a staunch friend of the US and helped us immensely during the cold war. While Obama was quick to make a trip to Mandela's funeral for a a photo op no such respect was given to Thatcher. While Obama was quick to identify with a slain black thug, no such eulogy was given Thatcher. I can't remember when Obama has lauded any white person unless it was a democrat to further liberal policies. Feel free to call me what you want but I see no racial unifying, as he promised, in this president.

Mandela achieved the equivalent, in South Africa, of George Washington, in the US(throwing off massive oppression by both force and reconciliation afterwords). Thatcher buffed Reagan's knob, and did little else, and died despised by her own people, in large part(based on post-mortem comments from actual Englishmen I know and read). Where is your sense of proportion?......oh, silly me, for asking that question.

I say good riddance to Mandela, the black, criminal president who ruined a country with is radical socialist agenda.

Normally I would agree, but Mandela was more than just "any foreign leader." He was an ideal leader, and legendary humanitarian, a man above men, and a worthy idol to all. Everyone would be better off knowing about his life and works and doing their best to be like him. Every country should lower their flags in his honor.

Only person pissing seems to be you and the Mensa reject TG. I certainly did not demean Mandela. You twisted a remark about Obama and tried to turn it into a causative remark about Mandela. Nice try tho.

Upon reflection, where Were all the women's rights groups when Obama ignored Thatcher? Seems to be a slap to their face when the male chauvinist in charge ignores the fact Thatcher did become prime minister of England. Of course the war on women is only despicable when some sleaze complains about a inflated cost of birth control and how it limits her ability to ride the rod every night and then gets called out on it.

Thatcher's accomplishments don't even compare to Mandella's. Sure, she may have been one of the first woman prime ministers, a great accomplishment, but she never lived any of her life in a prison cell just for being black and she never gave freedom to a whole nation's majority of racially of oppressed citizens. Now if we had a woman president woody, maybe SHE would have honored Thatcher back then because it would have been more personal, like Mandella is to Obama. I my book, Thatcher is more of an equivalent to Nancy Reagan, the other Iron Lady.

As for raising the flag to half-staff, I agree with Spidey. It's been abused for years to honor people not from this country, or for people not important enough in the scheme of the whole country to warrant it. It's become a junk shrine symbol for politicians.

Choosing one over the other becomes the problem in itself.

Mandela accomplished WAY more than Thatcher for far more people who had far worse lives, and he paid a heavy price for it. Sure, Thatcher helped out her country's economy and got things turned around, but she didn't FREE a whole nation of people from the brutal, BRUTAL, oppression of minority rule. Even if Mandela had been a conservative, I'd still think of him as a great man who accomplished something exceptional.

Thatcher did one more thing- she was called the 'Iron Lady' for a reason. She held the line against the Soviet Union- being derisively called the 'Iron Lady' by a Russian journalist, she took on the moniker as a badge of honor.

So what? Why does everything have to be a constant comparison and critique? I'm not sure I agree with the flag being lowered for non-Americans, seems like that should be a national thing only, but why...is...it...such...a...big...deal...???

I challenge anyone bitching in here to go and talk to a few ordinary British citizens to get their take on Margaret Thatcher. I know when she died, I saw a shitload of British sentiment that expressed in no uncertain terms, "Good ★■◆●ing riddance." I'm not saying it's justified, but a LOT of people hated her.

as I said earlier, she was literally DESPISED by the bulk of the populace there when she died....hence,the comparatively low-key events surrounding her death.
