Warez hurts sales, because you can download something for free that is being sold. And yes, D2 can still be obtained legally.

yeah, but nobody in their right mind would buy d2 in 2004.

the riaa sed the same thang about d/ling music and sales where going up

1. the games are shitty
Farcry - Yawn
UT2004 - got old fast
HL2 & DM3 - just a race to see who can make it look better than the other

2. Bad Story
Unreal 2 - man did it suck Unreals was bad ass but U2 was so stupid and dull

3. 4+ cds.
when will they learn to just go total dvd, i know theres a few doing it now but the drives are so cheep now and about every computer u buy has one hell my ibm i got back in 96 had one.

4. Demos
it seems like there just a lack of them and by the time one even comes out the game is allready in the bargin bin.

to me it just seems like once the GFX race started the game play started to suck bad , and alot of the games now are FPS wtf happens to the good old space sims like FS i know theres a few out there but they suck big time.

thats y i love my roms collection expecaley Mame cause the games may not be all fancey but there fun

Now if someone posted D3 up there, and people after they downloaded it bought it if they liked it.

I believe his point is that most games today are all graphics and severely lacking in gameplay, and that stuffing an assload of CDs into a box when it can all fit on a single DVD is rediculous. Damn near everyone has a DVD reader or burner so theres no reason to continue sticking games out only on CD. If they don't have one, they can be gotten for dirt cheap. Hell, I bought a Samsung 16x drive for $9 on clearance a few months back. (kudos to Max_T for informing me of that deal)

Getting back to the subject at hand, as long as they pay for a copy of the game, who cares if they download it to try it out? Half the time demos are a ★■◆● to get a copy of because they're either:

1. Too large to download in a reasonable ammount of time
2. Released at the same time as the release of the full version
3. Stuck on networks that are a real pain in the ass to download from (re: FilePlanet).

I agree, downloading something, and keeping it without paying for it is wrong. However, it can be a viable sampling service if done correctly. (ie: don't follow the RIAA's example by suing everyone blind)

Warez does hurt sales, far more than music downloads. Warez is much widespread; those who do it tend to regret it less often. I think its mostly because people usually download warez in order to avoid buying the game, (already know they want it) while people would download music to see if they like it. (want to try it out) I don't think P2P music downloading and Warez can be compared.

I agree with snoopy, but I also think there's a difference between warez and abandonware. Now, I don't know if you can still purchase D1 or D2 easily, probably not very (I see D2 on Froogle for 5 bucks). So if it's no longer being published, it means that there is no more money to be made for the publisher and certainly not for the developers (who already got paid). I'm not saying it's right, I'm saying that you need to come up with some concrete examples of how downloading D1 hurts Interplay's sales instead of touting "d/ling D1 == warez == bad" without some evidence.

I thought the sourcecode was released, making it essentially freeware...

The source was released, but that does not permit anyone to distribute the data files, which are required to play it.

What happens when the publisher tells all the employees to collect unemplyment? ;)

The source code doesn't contain the data files, which are necessary to run the game. See, all the source code does is make it easier for people to develop for the game. (ie: mods and the like) That would be like me releasing instructions on how to bake a pie, but without the ingredients, the instructions are useless.

I wouldn't consider downloading D1 bad, but I also wouldn't really consider it warez- what I mean by warez are recently released titles. (not trying to get something that can't be found for sale anymore) Once they get marked down to something like $5, all the company is trying to do is get their money back for printing the cd/shipping it, not for developing the game. So, once it hits the bargain rack, I don't have nearly as much of a problem with it. (since its no longer intended to cover development costs) Needless to say, its still illegal.
