So, in my usual tantalizing lust for knowledge, I've fallen to checking on the
Mar's Rovers once every few days. Now I see that the
Cassini is nearing it's mission start at Saturn.
Give me more! Wasn't there one going to Jupiter and a proble launched sometime in the 90's going to Pluto?

Heh, catching a falling space craft seems like one of those ideas that so not going to work...
(I'm not saying that it won't, it probably will. I'd just like to know who the guy was who said "Hey! We could catch it while it's falling! With
helicopters!! )

The Pluto mission, or New Horizons, was started, then underfunded and given a stop work order, but then Bush in some far budget gave it money so it's back up. I forget when launch date is scheduled, but it's something like 2015 it'll reach Pluto. Pretty amazing. Cassini is awesome. I've been watching that since it had 750 days till orbital insertion. Now it's only 22. People at JPL should get medals for being that smart.

It'll be nice to finally get some close-up shots of Pluto and Charon

Topher,Im sure that i have seen footage taken of them catching things from orbit before.
one being a net between 2 planes & the other was a forked pair of rails on the nose of a plane to catch thru the `chute shrouds, then cut away the remains of the `chute. was tested & used to catch film containers for spy sats before they had a much more secure way of retrieving them, IE laser, tight band microwaves etc.
footage was taken in the 60`s from recollection, but yes they have tried it & it works
cheers
