How do I optimize a Voodoo5 System for D3?

System Configuration:
P4 1.7ghz
512 MB PC 100 SDRAM
RealTek Avance AC 97 (onboard) sound
VOODOO5 5500 Video Card (64 MB RAM)
Internet over LAN (onboard VIA Chipset)
Win98 SE fully updated, including DirectX 9.0b
How should I have my BIOS, Drivers & Commandline set up? Currently I have the voodoo5 Drivers & BIOS at default settings.
My current commandline includes
-nointro -nomusic -nopentium3 -nosparkles -nomotionblur
I get timetests min 43/max 200ish on secret2.dem (with sound and network on)

In D3 setup/video, you got the default rendering device as, what was it, glide?

You know, I bet there's a few people that use voodoo5 for D3.
Like testiculese
And yes I do, thanks for asking

Hmm..what? FX5900, baby!
960x720 vsync'd looked/played best for me at that processor speed. Just make sure your Display settings Refresh rate is properly configg'ed.
Right-click on Desktop,->Properties->Settings. Change to 960x720. Hit apply. Then (Hit OK, then) hit Advanced. Go to Adapter. Change the dropdown to 85..100..whatever the highest available setting is that works. Hit ok. Change back to your regular resolution, and then hit ok.
BIOS AGP Arpeture can be 128 or 256, I think it was. I don't recall a difference between the two.

I have a 5900 Ultra, white square doesnt bother me all that much (dont really see it that often).
-nointro -nomusic -nopentium3 -nosparkles -nomotionblur
You should delete -nopentium3 unless there is a problem, disabling that also disables some performance enhancments from SSE, it will be faster without it. Also it is redundant with -nosparkles and -nomotionblur because those are the only visible SSE enhancements in D3. The ones that you dont see as easly are the 10-15% boost in the indoor triangle setup engine.

So take out the nopentium3 for the voodoo. Hmm good deal.
I'll see how it looks on the 5900 while I'm at it.

Take out the -nopentium3 for anything, Nvidia, ATI, 3dfx, whatever.

Someone has to say it...
Answer: "Remove Voodoo5, replace with actual video card."

STFU Mobius.
You know, I got closer to 200 average on my old Voodoo3 3000/P3 @ 1001 system, granted 640x480. I think a voodoo5 should do better then that in glide.

Even more: the video card isn't the bottleneck in this system. It's the RAM and the Processor.
Considering that I re-built the system to use what I have on hand, I think it does quite well for a $65.00 computer (and that includes the $30.00 it cost to ship it from my dad's house where it was sitting in his attic, dead). Hell, arguably I made money on this bad boy, in light of the fact that I swapped the CD-RW and DVD into my main system.
Yeah, I could swap in a Geforce card. Maybe push a few extra frames, even, but since I intend to play D3 with this 'puter, why would I want to use a sub-optimal API like OpenGL when I can use Glide? And factually, I'm not getting timetests like the above with full detail on @ 800 x 600, 1024 x 768, 1200 x 1024 or at any other resolution on my other P4 1.7ghz (FX 5900) system.
I guess I gotta jump on the STFU Mobius bandwagon here.
KROM: I edited in display settings on my timetest post. 1024x768xFullDetail so it's actually rather impressive imho.

I guess you missed the Whole Point to why WarAdvocat built this LEGACY BOX..D1/D2/D3 plus what ever other Glide/OpenGL 98 games are out there
He has another Machine WIth XP/Nvidia...blah blah,so forth and so on(trite expression) I am not hacking My XP machine for DOS Sound Emulators and Glide Wrappers. I too have my own legacy box for the same reason!

Like a Matrox G400?
I think a Voodoo
2 non-SLI outmatched that card in D3.

Everything destroyed a G400 in D3...

I didn't think a G400 even did 3d graphics.

Now take your winges and moans and shove them up your arse!
You even quoted the Winky Sniley - you blind, stupid, insane people. Now go find an old lady to run over!

When did Mobi ever say use a Matrox for games? He doesn't have to backpedal...

Hey, no one advocated that a Voodoo5 be used either. He set up the dangerous precedent of allowing the video card that anyone used for D3 to be opened up to mocking himself. And, besides, making fun of Mobi or Matrox is fun.

Back on track.... what Bubba said.
what bout VGA bios shadow and stuff
I know that it's been said that this was not to be enabled, but on the older system where I have a voodoo card (V3k), I always got a preformance bump from enabling them. Not sure why.

what ever happened to the -framecap 0/999 command line?

It's in there, look at the top line of my timetest post.
I'm actually running 85hz/vsynch now, seems to play and/or look better on glide than openGL.
I think it's pretty stupid how <certain people> are knocking the hardware, considering that the hardware is the one thing that will not be changing.
Thanks to all who HAVE contributed. I'm still tweaking this sucker, I am shooting for 200 frames in the timetest. Currently I average 200 in multi, which is all that really matters to me, but tweaking is fun.
