....it's one thing to be the conservative voice, the party of fiscal restraint, etc, etc, but being a political party means you have to maintain SOME moderation and be willing to govern:

just read a long-time acquaintance, never an Obama fan and generally quite a staunch conservative describe the Republicans as 'in a complete tailspin toward destruction'. Yup.

another longtime Republican also weighs in.....when you've lost folks like Bernenke and Brooks, your time as a functional, electable political party is numbered.

If you think Brooks is a "staunch conservative" I have a few bridges for sale...cheap. I watch reports on the NewsHour every week from him, and he is a moderate at best.

go re-read my sentences, please. I did NOT refer to Brooks that way, but another commentor who I know on another board. Brooks is and always has been a center-right moderate Republican......but, he has been a Republican, and works for a traditionally right-leaning think tank. Bernanke is a fiscal conservative to a great degree and his piece specifically addresses fiscal irresponsibility(he calls it stupidity). As I say, when the GOP is losing folks like them, there aren't enough folks left to carry any sort of national race, and yes, that will catch up with them over a few cycles down to the local levels.I've seen that happen here in Delaware. My district is traditionally 3-1 Republican, very white, very affluent. Our local State Rep and Senator both have serious races on their hands in the next few years, even though the latter is Senate minority leader.
