Global warming crisis!

If it is indeed a crisis, EVERYONE should play their part:
I’m inspired by Rep. Lamar Smith, R-Tex., who noticed something peculiar recently. It seems that EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy, who spends a lot of time telling Americans that they need to drive less, fly less, and in general reduce their consumption of fossil fuels, also flies home to see her family in Boston "almost every weekend"; the head of the Clean Air Division, Janet McCabe, does the same, but she heads to Indianapolis. In air mileage alone, the Daily Caller News Foundation estimates that McCarthy surpasses the carbon footprint of an ordinary American. Smith has introduced a bill that wouldn't target the EPA honchos’ personal travel, though: It provides, simply, that “None of the funds made available by this Act may be used to pay the cost of any officer or employee of the Environmental Protection Agency for official travel by airplane.”

This makes sense to me. We’re constantly told by the administration that “climate change” is a bigger threat than terrorism. And as even President Obama has noted, there’s a great power in setting an example: “We can’t drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times … and then just expect that other countries are going to say OK.”

Likewise, it’s hard to expect Americans to accept changes to their own lifestyles when the very people who are telling them that it’s a crisis aren’t acting like it’s a crisis. So I have a few suggestions to help bring home the importance of reduced carbon footprints at home and abroad:

Extend Smith’s bill to cover the entire federal government. We have Skype now, and Facetime. There’s no reason to fly to meetings. I’d let the President keep Air Force One for official travel, but subject to a requirement that absolutely no campaign activity or fundraisers take place on any trips in which the president travels officially.

Obama makes a great point about setting the thermostat at 72 degrees. We should ban air conditioning in federal buildings. We won two world wars without air conditioning our federal employees. Nothing in their performance over the last 50 or 60 years suggests that A/C has improved things. Besides, The Washington Post informs us that A/C is sexist, and that Europeans think it’s stupid.

In fact, we should probably ban air conditioning in the entire District of Columbia, to ensure that members of Congress, etc. won’t congregate in lobbyists’ air-conditioned offices.

Speaking of which, members of Congress shouldn’t be allowed to fly home on the weekends. Not only does this produce halfhearted attention to their jobs — the so-called “Tuesday to Thursday Club” — but, again, it produces too much of a carbon footprint. Even if they pay for the travel out of campaign funds, instead of their own budgets, they need to set an example for the rest of us — and for those skeptical foreigners that Obama mentioned.

So let them set an example FOR us like they want our country to set the example for the world.

Here's me waiting for them to not be hypocrites: Image Image

actually, I'd be alright with turning the AC off in DC on general principles, except for public spaces. Nonetheless, trying to use this lame argument to somehow diminish climate change, the study or preparation for climate change, or other environmental concerns is beyond irresponsible. For it to be put forth by an elected official is near censurable irresponsibility.

Hey, I got an idea slick...

How about you remove any AC units from your home, sell your cars and never use air travel again. Heck, why not cut all the electricity to your home?

Set a good example for us here at the DBB to follow. :D

That article is so full of bogus ideas that I don't even know where to start. I feel bad for anyone who can't see the problem with it.

Flies home almost every weekend?

The photo shows she's in a public airport, boarding a plane that probably has over 400 passengers on it. Guess those other passengers on every other airplane in the entire country puts out a larger footprint than... those same americans that fly.

The claim that america won two world wars without air conditioning?

It stands to reason that during the first world war, AC units were possibly used in federal buildings. It was large, but not so large it could not have been installed. And during the second world war?
The first federal building to be air-conditioned was the U.S. Capitol, beginning in 1928
... Oops. Guess someone should have checked their poorly thought out claim before publishing it.

AC is sexist?

Wow. I haven't seen a stretch like that in a while. Men on average burn more energy than women while sedentary, and that gives men more body heat than women, so men feel warmer than women in an office. But don't let that fact get in the way of a good feminist crusade.

Can I stop now? Because if I read more of that article, i'll probably end up writing a post twice as long refuting the bull★■◆● that's in it.

HA!

You might as well know I don't have air conditioning or heat. I live in Southern California where you don't really need either (sometimes it's a little too hot or cold, but I can manage without those luxuries). I also no longer own a car because public transportation takes me right to the front door of my workplace and everything I need is within walking/biking distance from my place (I don't miss driving at all). Regarding air travel, I never go back to Chicago where I grew up because I'm the last living member of my family and all my friends prefer to come to San Diego for visits (the weather, obviously). It works out great! Now, I would like to use less electricity, but at least I can say I'm doing better than most at reducing my carbon footprint. How about you?

well, we're going solar in VA! I love how NS has nothing to defend that utterly ludicrous article but to infer that board members should do more, without knowing the first thing about what any of us actually do.
