I know this has been dealt with in the past, but I can't find the thread. Anyway, my gf's PC has Norton AV 2002 installed and its set to expire on 7/4/04. How can I extend this? Doing an uninstall and a delete of the "Symantec" folder in Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data followed by a reinstall didn't fix the problem. Where else is it stashing the subscription info?

I don't know much about the system registry, but I seem to remember reading that that's where the information is stored.

i know when i had NAV 02 i just kept removing anything related to Norton or Symantec, and it would give me another year, till i got NSW 03 Pro. and even then it still gave me another free year. now i have NSW 04 Pro and yet again it gave me a free year

I've done it before with 2003. After uninstalling, I just deleted anything in the registry or on the hard drive with the word Norton or Symantec. With 2001 it was easy, though. Just a simple uninstall.

I can't remember, what's the subscription for? Isn't it just LiveUpdate? Or is it for the program itself? Meh.. I've been working with the corporate edition for too long...

It's for the liveupdate subscription for the latest virus definitions. Load of crap if you ask me. Paying for the product should guarantee you all of the quality service the company of the product provides.

As far as AV software in Symantec's case, they provide security against viruses. Of course purchasing a product is never enough for big companies that are in the technology medium. Always some sort of add on fee that pops up somewhere

It's hard. On one hand the little people get raped up the a[spoiler][/spoiler]ss in the consumer market. However on the other hand these companies need to do these things to stay in business because it costs so much to support it. It's a vicious cycle.

As an aside, whats the difference between NAV 2002, 2003 or 2004 if you can keep getting updates for free?

Hey guys, thanks for actually answering my question. I'm not sure of the differences between the new versions, I believe the newer ones (2003, 2004) have spyware removal tools and product activation (ugh).

I ended up figuring it out myself:

1. Uninstall Norton AV
2. Uninstall LiveUpdate
3. Uninstall LiveReg
4. Delete any "Symantec" folder found in C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Application Data
5. Reinstall Norton AV

This worked just fine.

Doesn't work, the standalone update checks your subscription.
