Young Iranian chess grandmaster expelled from national team for not wearing hijab
Iran has banned 18-year-old chess grandmaster Dorsa Derakhshani from competing for the national chess team for not wearing a hijab – obligatory dress for women under Iranian law.
Derakhshani was expelled for not covering her hair with the garment – compulsory wear for women since the Islamic Revolution in 1979 – while competing as an independent player in the 2017 Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival.

Her brother Borna, 15, has also been banned after competing against Israeli player Alexander Huzman in the same tournament.
The siblings have subsequently been precluded from competing in future international competitions for the Islamic Republic. Dorsa obtained her International Master and Woman Grandmaster titles last year and currently lives in Barcelona, Spain, after taking up the offer of a year’s residency.
The head of Iran's Chess Federation, Mehrdad Pahlevanzadeh, was quoted as saying the Chess Federation will deal with the siblings in the “severest way possible.”

Plus it is their loss, Grand Masters probably aren't that easy to find in a small country like that.

I guess TB's attitude illustrates exactly what has been wrong with US foreign policy, by and large. We wish to decry and dictate to every culture who has a different norm than us.

So slavery would be perfectly acceptable to slick if it were a 'cultural norm.'

no, I'm worried about when THIS becomes more and more common in MY COUNTRY, and the administration remains silent:

but, I'm just fine letting other folks sort out their own societies and their own crap. Sigma is ok with an oligarchal police state(his words to some extent)? He is good to go living where he's at. Now, I also support open borders to allow folks to seek out their comfort level in a society, but that is another matter entirely, and admittedly not practical or even safe in a pure sense.

Nightshade, I'm against such ridiculousness. What would you have us do about it?

Hey, I was going to post that link in the other thread where I was
trying to give examples to Spidey that right wingers can be violent morons too.

actually, the UN is the only proper forum to resolve such issues within an appropriate community.

So meddling is ok as long as it’s done through proper channels…got it.

not really what I said. I said, rather clearly, that a NATION imposing its will unilaterally upon another culture is what gets us into trouble. Because, we are not a member or citizen of that country. What feeble excuse we have for a global community, of which we are all members, is the UN, formulated to sort serious grievances out amongst the community. Meddling by a majority? Perhaps, but it is at least the recognized venue.
